Unhappy N54 Rod knock?

Hi guys just wanted to confirm my suspicions of rod knock on my 335i. Are there any other checks I can do to confirm? Car still drove fine and no fault codes etc

Any help appreciated

There is a somewhat common failure in the A/C compressor that sounds just like a spun bearing.

If you don't see all kinds of glitter in the oil filter, then remove the serpentine belt and see if the noise is eliminated.

Had the exact same noise when my AC compressor went this past weekend. If I hadn't heard whining first before it turned into knocking over a 750 mile drive, I would have thought it was my motor too (and certainly did for a bit).

OP, I noticed the AC compressor really knocks in intervals of 600-650rpm. Try holding 1200 and 1800 and see if it knocks more at those speeds but less in between, unsure how these motors are specifically but S65 rods like to knock the most in the 2500-3000 range. Sounded like yours was lower so I'd wager it's the AC compressor.

It's always hard to tell for sure over the interwebs but that genuinely doesn't sound like a rod knock to me. Try removing the belt and running it for a minute--I bet it sounds fine.
