N53 smoke

Hi

Got an otherwise healthy N53 on 54k miles but occasionally it throws blue smoke out of the back on cold startup.

I am aware that this suggests valve stem seals but I was wondering if this could be the CCV and if so, wondered how that would result in oil getting into combustion chamber? Does the oil pool in the inlet and run down into the cylinder?

Oil consumption is very good, approx half a litre in 3000 miles since last oil change, is not asking for an oil top up yet.

Am going to ask BMW opinion too but honestly I can't see them being much help. I did post about this a year or so back and it's not got worse. Can't see it getting better either and I am concerned it'll damage the injectors or cat eventually.

Any comments or thoughts appreciated. Video shows cold start after car was sat for 3 days. No visible oil leaks, cam cover not leaking. No oil in plug wells.

Thanks
Mike

Whilst you have relatively few miles, things such as seals deteriorate with time exposure to heat and oil so that is a possibility depending on the age of your car.
However, if you are not losing that much oil, that would suggest the cause is otherwise.
Perhaps the first question that should be asked is if you are sure it's oil and not just water vapour - condensation can occur in the engine and exhaust, especially if cold and so perhaps that's the issue.
In answer to the question about passage of oil, the CCV oil separator should prevent the majority of oil from entering the inlet manifold if working correctly but I think there will always be a little oil vapour that gets through.

More likely one or more injectors is leaking when not in use and the smoke you see is the excess fuel (which sits in the cylinder) being burnt off after start-up.

Yes, but the unburnt fuel washes the cylinder walls of oil while it sits in the cylinder overnight. So it becomes a mix of petrol and oil, so I'd expect it to be blue...

I thought index 11 were supposed to be solid? They've only been on the car about 12k and just over two years (so just outside parts warranty but I have mondial anyway).

I have no other injector symptoms - no misfires etc. Any way to test this theory?

Could CCV account for this ? The CCV does make a humming noise when hot but there is no excessive vacuum at oil cap.

Yep, no codes. That's using ISTA/D as it's a F10.

Did a millers oil analysis recently which showed up all clear too. I think that includes fuel contamination.

So are index 11 injectors already failing ? Does anyone have any that have failed?

Are the index 12 on n54 failing regularly too, anyone know?

Suspect that they just can't get them reliable if after 11 revisions they are still unreliable.
