Aye I know mate, but I have a strong urge to get a droptop, I have no need for rear seats and the Boxster is much newer and lower mileage of course.

I have also lined up (for a total of £2250) all the components for the 345bhp conversion fitted.

So for less than 30k I will have a 345bhp Boxster S which (no disrespect) I will be expecting to knock the socks off any C2/C4S due to the extra power, less weight and less transmission loss than the C4.

Granted, I can't hang around with a Turbo, but IMHO all N/A Porsches begin with less power than they should...

Beauty is in the eye of the beholder, and there is little doubt (in my mind) that the 911 is a better looking car, and certainly less common, with more prestige, but for the examples which are at a similar price as the finished Boxster - its a no brainer to me.

I feel like this is one of those times when the expression 'buy the shittest house on the nicest street' springs to mind - the Boxster S gets me into Porsche ownership for less, with the security of low miles and a newer car, whilst still allowing me the potential to really upset some heavy metal.

Garage List
Matt - they are good cars in their own right. Don't fall for the "poor man's 911" or any of that cack.

911s are superb but fundamentally flawed with their design - sure Porsche have worked miracles but still can't 100% defeat basic physics. The Boxster was designed with the engine in the right place from the start. I should think a Boxster with 911T power would be an absolute weapon of the highest order.

I'm a bigger fan of the Cayman but they do look a wee bit cramped and claustrophobic.

Don't worry, I don't subsribe to any such garbage about Boxsters being anything other than what they are - they ARE a poor mans 911 if a 911 is what you wanted, but what do I want? A 345bhp Boxster!!!

I agree the Cayman holds more kudos, I am sure point to point they are faster too, but it seems obscure to me to pay MORE for a hardtop than a convertible, and in all fairness, I believe I am a good, competent driver thats ready to learn, but I expect the level of talent required to squeeze the extra performance out of the Cayman will always allude me.

I'd rather know that I can drop the top anytime its sunny, and have 99% of the pace, rather than have tiniest ability to corner quicker, and wish I had a drop top when it was sunny!

Matt,

It sounds to me like you're a man with a (great) plan.

What parts do you need to buy to achieve your 345bhp?
Would these be a self fit, or is it something a garage would need to fit for you.

That should be a tremendous package all rolled into one.

They're not too bad, and feel a bit more airy than the Boxster (roof up obviously). However if you want a relaxed, quiet drive, its the wrong car - the howl (whilst wonderful IMO) has drawn plenty of negative comments from my passengers.

The Cayman does feel more rigid than the Boxster, but not enough to make a decision of one over the other IMO - I didn't particularly want a soft top and my Cayman came along at a great price & spec so I went for it - I would have happily had a Boxster instead if a nice one had come along.

Sheps,

I found a guy who can do it on the link which MOB sent earlier.

Basically, it seems they arrange a group buy for about 3 - 5 members every so often, this chap fits all the kit for you whilst you wait and everyone mills around and has a BBQ or a chat or whatever.

For £1500 you get an inlet manifold, an improved 'Plenum' and a remap.... all fitted. I guess the chap takes a few quid but you cant knock him for that!!

You then just need a BMC Air Filter or similar, which he charges you for, or you can supply yourself, and the final piece of the puzzle is a decent exhaust. Suggested brands are Remus or Magnex...

I got offerred the BMC and the Remus used by another chap for £750 so my total was £2250 - cant knock it at all for that price, plus maybe £30 for fitting the exhaust and I can stick the BMC on myself, or I am sure matey would do it when I handed over the £1500 job lot.

I think it sounds like a very tight package as well. May not make its quoted BHP figures, but with RR graphs coming in between 340 and 355bhp I would take that as decent enough for the money, especially for what is (to me) bread and butter, non offensive, low maintenance mods (its not like a turbo kit for example)

Oh, and the £1500 worth of bits you COULD fit yourself easily it seems, but it sounds like the relationship between the guy who does it and the remap specialist (its turned around whilst you wait across the ocean lol) is helpful, and the community element is well worth it for me.

That sounds fantastic man, let us know how you get on.
That's a nice gain for sensible money - usually NA tuning is prohibitively expensive.

Everyone in the press always said the Cayman and Boxsters were obviously purposefully throttled so as not to upset 911 drivers. Seems once yours is done that's exactly what you're going to be doing!!!

Good skills.

Re: Exhausts - lots of debates on PlanetPorsche over aftermarket exhausts droning - a real issue for Porsches for some reason. Some worse than others.

There is a group buy on at the moment for a Speedart system, which is supposed to look and sound great - with little droning. Looks great too.

Just make sure you do your research as plenty of owners remove their aftermarket exhausts after getting fed up with the noise

Yeah your right mate, someone did make a point of mentioning to me that the Remus doesn't drone - and now I know why!!!

Encouraging that it wasn't the seller lol.

I will do some research though, as that is obviously important.
