This Service Information bulletin supersedes SI B11 09 07 dated January 2009.

SUBJECT
Intermittent Hydraulic Valve Adjuster (HVA) Noise

MODEL
All E82, E83, E88, E85, E86, E60, E61, E70, E90, E91, E92 and E93 vehicles with N51, N52 or N52K engines produced approximately up to November 31st 2008; refer to cylinder head casting identification attachment.

SITUATION
An occasional ticking or rattling noise from the camshaft hydraulic valve lifters (HVA) may occur during cold engine starts, due to frequent short-distance driving, or the noise may occur for an extended period of time even though the engine is at operating temperature.

Improved parts were phased into production beginning on 10/1/2008 and fully implemented on November 31st 2008.

CORRECTION
Do not perform the bleeding procedure that was previously provided in SI B11 09 07 which has now been deleted.

All vehicles produced between 10/1/2008 and 11/31/2008 must have each vehicle's cylinder head casting number identified before hydraulic valve lifters (HVA) replacement, due to staggered implementation. Refer to the attachment for the casting number location. Vehicles produced after 11/31/2008 have already been fitted with improved parts. Vehicles produced prior to 10/1/2008 will require the new parts.

Improved Casting Numbers

N51 (B30)
7588277.01

N52 (B30)
7588273.01

N52K (B30)
7588271.01

A cylinder head casting number that does not match will require replacement of the 12 exhaust camshaft hydraulic valve lifters (HVA) as per Repair Instruction RA 11 33 050, Removing and installing/replacing all rocker arms. Only the exhaust camshaft and rocker arms have to be removed in order to replace the hydraulic valve lifters. Do not remove or replace any intake camshaft valve train components.

Note: The following explanations will spell out the correct use of the work times.

Main Work:

Agree....in that area....

However, this thread deals with the design flaw of the N52 from 2006 to 2009ish pending on the build date.

Click my u2b sig., and the design flaw will be noted as something that is wrong, and just not normal noise.

iDriveanXi, good luck going forward.
Very good info- thank you for that.

I have Sedan E90 2008 and a week prior to my warranty expired as others suggested in this thread, I took it to the dealership and they fixed it without any questions.
So far the car is running well without any ticking. Knock on wood!

All I did was showing the video to my SA that I took with my iPhone that shows the ticking noise, a reference to this thread on the email and also the TSB number.
I'm not sure if they replaced the lifters or the head or both. I can go back check the receipt and update you guys if someone needs it.

Lastly, I want to say thank you for everyone that's contributing to this thread.
It was very helpful to get it fixed (in my case).

Good day!

UPDATE: Dealer just called me. He stated he talked with BMW NA and they are willing to cover half the cost of the original $2134 for the new lifters. In talking with the SA I asked why part 11-33-7-631-589 can't be found anywhere. He stated that it is the latest fix for the lifter tick and actually replaces the cylinder head solution. Hope this helps folks.

the engine sounds completely different in better way, it just sounds much tighter.

all you guys, report it as soon as possible if you're under any type of warranty.

I took the car in for a new head (lifters were replaced previously) and they ended up replacing the drag levers and telling me this is the new fix. I'm really confused now and this dealer service department is notoriously impossible to deal with. Frankly, they suck. Anyway, at this point I just wish I had left the car alone because the ticking was better than my car sounding like a diesel.

11-12-7-581-215 PROFILE-GASKET x1 $25.02

11-33-7-631-589 ROLLER DRAG LEVER x12 $137.88

NOTE: The prices are based on what Tisher sells them for. Also I could not find part # 11-33-7-631-589.

UPDATE: Heard back from my dealer. The 11-33-7-631-589 is an updated part that apparently fixes the lifter tick. Only problem is I can not find it for purchase from outside my dealer. RealOEM does not have the part listed.
For me it was the new head. From some of the posts above it looks like BMW is now replacing the rockers.

If someone has anything new on the rockers it would help, such as a new TSB where the rockers are replaced. That looks like the new avenue BMW is taking, as replacing the head was my solution, and is very costly to BMW.

It looks like BMW is still trying the cheap way out of this issue.

Those with the latest solution via the new rockers should help as that is the most recent news. Good luck going forward.

At this time the latest posts with the issue can help. Maybe those with the latest fix can do a follow up, or post the invoice. If out of warranty/CPO then I would wait till to see if the rocker solution is a real fix. Again good luck going forward.

It is very confusing at this time with the new information coming out.

make sure your oil is at a good level... the only way to do this is to do an oil change... when you do it, add a bottle of lucas synthetic oil stabilizer.. problem solved!

finally replacing a Cylinder Head...

Finally My dealership has ordered a part after they got approval from BMW to replace a Cylinder head. It will be weeks before the part comes in and they can do the replacement. the Rep. did say that oil was forming air bubbles and the ticking noise is bursting of the bubbles .

I am still concerned that this replacement will not screw up the engine I am a newbie to the car mechanical world so forgive my stupidity

I am so fed up with how much BS the SAs and other "service professionals" exhibit when trying to describe the problem.

Very interesting that BMW is going to replace the head. That was my fix with no problems...Still 100%.

However, I still find it confusing that BMW now in allot of cases is replacing the rockers as the new fix, and you get the new head?

Thumbs up on the new head.

Until I hear proof that the new rockers are the real solution, due to the lack of oil flow in the N52, I will stay with my position of the new redesigned head as the real fix.

Best of luck.

Keep the thread up to date.

'08 328i with 50,000km. If I take a short drive, not allowing the motor to fully warm up, the next time I start the car, I will hear this ticking sound. It goes away once the motor is fully warmed up, but sometime can persist for maybe 10 minutes of driving. I will take a video of it and bring to BMW to see what they can do for me. I still have CPO warranty.

Another example of when it happens. If my car is on parked on the driveway, and I start it just to put it in the garage, and shut it down without a warmup. When I start the car the following morning, it will emit a loud ticking sound. Sounds like lifters for sure.

09 Lifters being replaced.

I just bought an 09 328i with 57km.

After viewing the threads on the noisy, ticking hydrolic lifters I decided to buy the 09 as apparently the lifter problem had been solved in the 09 LCI N52 motor.
A week after getting the car home I was greeted by a noisy exhaust lifter one evening, damn! this can't be happening, this is an 09, so I thought.

The next day I drove to Otto's BMW in Ottawa where I had previously booked the car in to have them look at whirling turbine sort of noise that makes the vehicle sound more like an old bus. (This whirling noise seems to be a re-occuring theme on the forums). While showing the SA the car I mentioned the lifter noise and he said he would look into it.

Two hours later the SA returned with a smile on his face saying that the noisy lifters would be covered under the BMW PUMA warranty, bring the car in Friday.

Sure enough as to the Service Notice my car was a September 08 build and had the old lifters, the new lifters to correct the issue didn't start being installed in the new motors at the factory till November of 08.

Oh yeah, the whirling sound I originally brought the car in for was normal; BS I thought, Friday we'll have the SA out for a drive.

Update: 2 months now on my new lifters and still quiet as can be. I've made some short trips and also have had some pretty cold weather. No tick what so ever. I'm very happy, I only hope that it remains that way. Good luck to all.
