Whining noise at very low speed?
Hi All,
I have this really weird whining noise and I'm not sure where it's coming from. What I've noticed is, it will only happen at very low speeds, like just as im pulling away, it seems if I where to accelerate and use the brake ls at something slow like 5MPH it will keep whining and then it just goes away straight away. I'll try to get a sound clip of it at some stage but any ideas? |

Internal or External? Could be many things, you really need someone to assist and see if they can hear outside. Possibilities are bearings, differential, pulleys etc.

Hi mate,
What's strange though is the sound only seems to happen when I accelerate or brake within that very low speed. If it was the brakes dragging then it should be a constant noise regardless? I'll try to upload a video as I use a dashcam on my phone and that should pick it up |

As I said to the last chap what's unique about this noise it is only seems to happen when I either accelerate or brake, it's not a constant noise. It will only happen at very low speeds then go, if it was something like brakes or bearings then the noise should be constant regardless. Pulleys, again these are spinning all the time so I can't imagine what could cause a noise a lt low speeds and only with accelerating or braking, I think the key here is low speed and only when accelerating or braking (that's what I remember it as anyway) |

I had rear diff replaced under warranty for a whinny noise which I could only ever hear (in the car) under 10-15 mph - both accelerating and braking. Beyond those speeds nothing discernible. If you free wheel from 20 down to 0 do you still get a noise as you’re coming to a halt without touching brakes? If so it would rule brakes out and point to some other rotating part (I still guess diff, though that’s just my stab in the dark based on personal experience).

Does it not go away when you apply light brake pressure? Could be the gearbox or the diff if it's a constant whining at low speed, does it change with speed or in different gears?

I suppose I'll have to get a video to really get across what sort of whine I'm talking about, it's bloody embeassasing when it does happen though |

Yeah, to fast, to slow, I can't even cunt someone off to myself in the privacy of my own car, it's just constant whining. Never used to do it

Similar noise on mine turned out to be the diff. But i also had a worn out wheel bearing which was done after the diff. The noise you describe went away after the diff refurb. I did take it to the mechanic when the noise was intermittent and they could never reproduce it, had to wait for it to get worse before it could be detected.

+1 for diff or gearbox. Seems like you can hear it when there's torque (accel or decel) being transmitted at low speed, which leads me to drive line.... Whining noise must be gears.

If it happened more frequently I'd stick a voice recorder under the car but half the time it doesn't even make that noise |
