My 2008 335i (49,000 on odo) will be out of warranty in 1 year and 2 months.
I'm currently a student, and I work part time two or three days a week at an accounting office. I have a heavy course load, and working between classes and studying is "difficult". When I have enough saved up, i'll take a break.
How much money should I set aside for maintenance/repairs? Is it safe to assume that $1000 is enough every 8k miles/year?

Edit: Tires, gas, and insurance will be footed by my wonderful parents. Assume I do oil changes, air filter replacements, brakes, and spark plugs myself over the weekend. And I've already replaced the car's battery.
Pretty much just looking at potential repairs costs!

I would keep $2-$3K aside for emergency because it's pretty easy to spend $1K for small repairs..

For that little mileage, I say yes. I put a provision of 150$/mo for 15000miles/yr. So far after 20 months, my out of warranty/out of included maintenance actual average is 130$.

$200/ mo asside from any payment you have if you don't do any of your own work. Basics are easy on these rides, oil changes brakes ect. The neat thing is that brakes almost never need to be changed compared to every other car I ever owned. The gm and japanese shit boxes I used to drive uses up pads every 25k, a bmw can go 80 if not tracked. And oil changes every 7500 (give of take depending on who you ask). A clutch should last 100k miles plus unless you can't drive a stick real well.

Your 335i is a little more to keep up with things like carbon build up, turbos and the like to keep an eye on. Water pump is a bitch too, pricey part and labor.

And I assume you are in your late teens/ early 20s.. At that age I wouldn't have been able to keep rear tires on a 335i. I had a pretty bitchin ride at that age and I had the same problem

set aside 50 bucks a week =D I am a student as well so in order to save I have to roll up my sleeves and DIY basic everything on the DIY list.

There is no denying an economy car (japenese or other) will cost less to maintain, even if oil changes are more frequent than 15,000 miles and the fluids aren't lifetime
