Service Engine Soon Light On

first problem with the car service engine soon light came on. took it to auto zone and they gave me code p316a as the problem. does anyone know what this means? i had an injen dci installed when it happened. weird idles and the fan always boosts all the way up when it happens. also i get a reading on my nav unit that says increased battery discharge. any help would be appreciated.

Sounds to me like you answered your own question.

In the future it might help if you told us about your car - for example -" I have a 1902 Stanley Steamer with the one speed transmission and I have driven an estimated 80 miles in the year that I've had it..."

i think he also wanted to know how many miles you drove it or if there was a suspected reason for the battery discharge, like playing music in your car till it turns off by itself, or leaving parking lights on, or multiple short trips where you never reach the long cruising speeds required to continual charging of your battery.

Thanks, Jay Leno!

To the OP. Do a little internet research and learn about OBD II (On-Board Diagnostics) troble codes. First off the code you've given doesn't exist. "P" codes in OBD II stands for "Powertrain" and usually have a zero (0) after the "P". So I think the code you have is P0316, which is a cylinder misfire code.

It looks like you've modded the car. I suggest taking this question to the section of the Forum that deals with N54 engine mods and see whta the guys over there say.

The code was p316a. The car is my daily driver and just hit 29000 miles. No tune just yet. Just a dci. Also this morning my car reset somehow, I don't like what it's doing. The odometer reset and the time reset to blank. The display read increased battery discharge and the service engine light was gone. What is going on????

P136A is "Engine Coolant Temperature Signal Stuck High."

Sounds like a faulty coolant temp sensor to me.

Any work done on the coolant system recently? Any leaks? Could be a pocket of air that is being sucked in through a leak....causing the readings to fluctuate.

Also air in the pump can cause the bearings to seize up. Which can slow down pump operation and decrease cooling effectiveness.

No leaks and no work on the coolant system. Where would there be leaks? Like if there were where specifically would I look for them? Thanks for the help

First clear the code and see if it re-occurs.

The car reset itself and the ses light went away and I'm guessing the code did too, but when it reset I got a message of increased battery discharge and the odometer and clock were blank.

The "service engine soon" light means that there is a trouble code that is affecting the emissions of the vehicle. OBD II is solely for diagnosing emissions-related faults in the combustion cycle of the engine. OBD II is a standard across all manufacturers; it was enacted by law (in the USA) for all cars starting in 1996 to prevent manufacturers from having proprietary codes that only they could diagnose and repair.

The law does allow for manufacturers to use manufacturer-specific codes for faults of systems that are not emissions related. But if the SES light is lit, the code can be read by any code reader. A BMW specific code doesn't start with a "P".

5:44PM update top my earlier post:

So I was in the garage today cleaning up and checked my Bentley repair manual. fdriller is correct there is a P316A code "Engine Coolant Temperature Signal Stuck High." So you learn something new everyday. As far as I understood OBD II codes P codes either have a "0" as the second digit meaning the code is a SAE standard code or a "1" for a manufacturer specific code. I also think fdriller is correct in his diagnosis that the coolant temperature sensor is bad. The sensor is right up near the oil filter housing and is a easy swap out. I'd clear the code, replace the temp sensor with a new one, and see what happens.

but what about the car resetting itself and showing increased battery discharge? i mean it cant be a sensor on that end or can it? someone said that the replaced all the spark plugs at the dealership when they took it in. still not convinced it is a sensor.

Did you ever figure out if this was truly a coolant sensor issue or a battery issue? I'm having a similar problem with the same code.

I got this code 2 days ago, temps was hot, I am going to get the replacement sensor see how this goes, btw I can't clear the code with my go point obd.

update: the SES code went away after 20 miles of driving. so if that SES code pop back on I will replace the sensor.
