Outrageous prices for the leaking gaskets. Very common problem that BMW doesn't cover warranty, although I believe you are out of warranty anyways. My advice is to do take it to an independent garage that specializes in bimmers and charges a labour rate of around $60. The gaskets are cheap and good shops will charge you the actual time spent, not the book time.

im pretty sure they dont have to be replaced, just take him out wipe any dirty contaminants plus compressed air to make sure plug it in should be fine. there is a thread talking about this.

Don't waste your time swapping the vanos solenoids. Just follow the DIY linked in on of my posts to remove, clean with MAF cleaner, and blow out with compressed air. It is honestly on of the easiest thing you can do your self:

VANOS solenoids are an easy DIY.... You can buy them in the US for about $105 each.

Thanks for all the responses guys.
Just thought I'd give an update....got my car back the next evening...Total came to $1,063.45 to change the thermostat and waterpump, which was pretty good considering all the other private shops that I called quoted me for $200-$300 more than that. I will look into cleaning the solenoids if/when they become an issue. |
