Few issues with my BMW - need recommendations

Sent my car into the stealership today to get the waterpump and thermostat changed and got the following e-mail from my SA:

Quote:
Here’s the recommendations for your vehicle.

When we scanned the car, there was a fault for the Vanos solenoids. These solenoids help with the operation of the camshafts and allow the valve timing to work properly. With these solenoids having a fault, the vehicle may run quite rough. $624.89

It does appear there are 2 engine oil leaks with the vehicle. Oil filter housing gasket $728.74 and oil pan gasket $1055.76.

All prices include parts, labor, and tax.
Are these changes necessary for me to make? What do you guys recommend I do here....As of right now, I've told them to go ahead with the waterpump/thermostat and I'll deal with the other things at a later time.

Thanks in advance for your suggestions.

Outrageous prices for the leaking gaskets. Very common problem that BMW doesn't cover warranty, although I believe you are out of warranty anyways. My advice is to do take it to an independent garage that specializes in bimmers and charges a labour rate of around $60. The gaskets are cheap and good shops will charge you the actual time spent, not the book time.

Thanks Brian; How about the Vanos solenoids? Do these really need to be changed? Anyone else with any other advice?

How much are they charging you for waterpump and thermostat out west? You shouldn't be paying more than $900 parts and labour

Garage List
Don't waste your time swapping the vanos solenoids. Just follow the DIY linked in on of my posts to remove, clean with MAF cleaner, and blow out with compressed air. It is honestly on of the easiest thing you can do your self:

VANOS solenoids are an easy DIY.... You can buy them in the US for about $105 each.

Thanks for all the responses guys.

Just thought I'd give an update....got my car back the next evening...Total came to $1,063.45 to change the thermostat and waterpump, which was pretty good considering all the other private shops that I called quoted me for $200-$300 more than that.

I will look into cleaning the solenoids if/when they become an issue.
