Replace coolant hoses with water pump and thermostat?

I'm at 105k now and I'm going to replace the water pump and thermostat real soon. Would you guys recommend replacing all the coolant hoses as well?

Yes. My car is two years newer and I’ve had to replace a couple due to them being brittle and breaking at the slightest touch. Good preventative maintenance and you won’t have to worry for another ten years.

Not all but all of the ones you are going to touch. Also probably not a bad idea to replace the one coming from below the oil filter housing and the return one that comes across the top of the radiator. The former because doing the water pump is a big PITA and you dont want to have to go in there anytime soon, so replacing all of the ones that touch that saves you the trouble. The latter because those two have plastic fittings incorporated in them that crumble at the mere thought of touching them.

The big hoses that are easy to replace, Id wouldn't. I also wouldn't be pulling the manifold to get to all of those. Tons of money and PITA for hoses that dont tend to fail catastrophically anymore. However, if you do have to pull the manifold to do the starter sometime in the future, yeah replace everything under it.

What brand water pump are you guys using? Anyone try one other than OEM?
I know changing these are a bear, so I would tend to get an OEM, however if they have such a fail rate, maybe another brand might hold up better?
Comments appreciated.

N52 pumps dont really have a high failure rate. Maybe once in the lifetime of the vehicle.

How much are those hoses? Do you have part numbers or diagram?

Is it worth replacing or doing any other work when replacing water pump/thermo?

You should definitely replace the hose that connects the waterpump and thermostat as it has to be removed from the car to replace the waterpump.

So i did my waterpump and tstat back in 2016 at 105k miles, my indy also did the expansion tank for me as well. I also did the pulley kit at about the same time and vcg as all preventative maintaince (nothing had failed).

but i wish i had known to do the expansion tank hose because 2 years later and 60k miles that "straw" got a leak and caused me to tow the car home and the spray of coolant at the pulleys caused them all to squeal and a soaked belt which all made them suspect so i had to do that entire pulley kit job again

So i would recommend doing the following:
1) pulley/tensioner kit
2) as part of that job they need to remove they coolant bypass hose (usually it breaks so change that entire hose)
3) its suggested to change the expansion tank hose
4) but as you try to change the expansion tank hose it will break the nipple on the upper raditor coolant hose so change that too
5) might as well do a coolant flush and the expansion tank and cap as well while at it
6) since everything is already apart might as well do the OFHG
7) if you are OCD like me i changed my starter as well since it has 11 years and 167k miles
8) if your an n54 motor... this might be a good time to change out all the boost vacuum lines and the boost solenoids.
9) if its time to do spark plugs soon... this is a good time to do it

at this point you are solid for another 100k miles

consider getting the kits/parts from fcpeuro for free lifetime replacment warranty FTW

Appreciate the help y'all. For clarification, can you guys identify which specific hoses that I should replace in the pictures below?

Definitely #1 in both pictures, which is the water pump to thermostat hose.

I think #7 is the hose that fazman and ryan stewart mentioned that breaks, correct?

Forgot how I found this page but I think this may be the solution to it.

Let me know what you guys think.

I replaced the OFHG and Oil Cooler Housing Gasket 2 years ago so I'm good there.

Here's a list of my maintenance plans:
- Water pump, thermostat, and hoses
- Coolant flush
- Accessory belt, pulleys and tensioner
- Valve cover gasket and valve cover
- Boost vacuum lines and boost solenoids (thanks fazman, did research after you mentioned it)
- Spark plugs
- Air filter and microfilter

- Oil pan gasket
- Walnut blast

The last two I thought of doing myself also, but I think it would take too much time for me so I think I'll have a shop do the job.

Kinda went off topic but if you guys have any other suggestions for maintenance, let me know!

It only breaks if you remove the top part of the hose where the plastic is, if you don't touch that portion you are okay. I wouldn't change any of the hoses unless they are starting to bulge. The only easy one is the U shaped one that you need to remove anyways, the others may be best to leave undisturbed depending on condition

The flange on number 7 will break under casual driving conditions- has happened to myself and others. Also I would pick up some overflow tank reservoir bleeder screws, the usual auto parts stores will have them and they to break

replaced hoses with pump and thermostat

I did the replacement last weekend. Did the upper and lower hoses as part of the job. Got the OEM kit from ECS Tuning. One tip - the hose that comes off the back of the water pump is a bear to reach. In retrospect I wish I had paid more attention to the angle of the hose on the old pump when I removed it and attached the new hose just like that before installing the pump. Steve

Yeah and its easy enough Id just get it done.

Also I forgot, go ahead and order a radiator drain screw assembly for your radiator. Its fragile as hell, just have it just in case those tabs break.

Why not just use the Aluminum adapter found on ebay and keep the rubber hose if it is okay.

Oh yes absolutely lol. First time I ever did a n5x water pump was on my 135i some years ago, didn't know how it worked so I undid the entire peacock, breaking the winglets/tabs. Somehow it inserted back in and held for a day or two, and shot out the moment I shut off the engine following a hundred mile trip.

330i's pump goes a few years later- and my slotted head just barely grazes the screw and the head just falls off like an autumn leaf off a tree.

Replace that peacock and screw lol

Who is the manufacturer of the OE water pump?
The other brand pump I see a lot is the perburg (spelling?) , but not sure if they make the OEM pump or not? Or if it’s worth the extra money getting a “bmw branded” pump vs. another brand one?

Pierburg manufactured the N52 pump. I used them on both my N52's. Wouldn't recommend anything but BMW Pierburg or the OEM Pierburg. Pierburg published an analysis of a chinese compatible that had significant design problems. Note this wasn't a "Pierburg" ripoff brand; just a poor quality compatible. Pierburg replacement kit from FCPEuro is the best price I've found from a name house, at US$375 or so.

Anyway: One original BMW Pierburg failed at 60K miles (E60); the other original BMW Pierburg I PM'd at 100K (E91). The 100K was giving signs of failure.

VDO Continental did the N54.

I've read the VDO has a problem with the plastic case cracking/leaking.

Ok, yea I wasn’t sure if pierburg made the oem pumps or not... I do have a n52 328.
The pierburg pump kits are like $375ish, the bmw branded ones are another or so at $475ish. I guess it’s not really worth the money or up charge to have the “bmw branded” one if it’s just a rebranded pierburg pump.
