Anyone figured out how to clear GM tranny Oil Life error codes?

No issues but when recoding my battery using the protools app it popped up with an error code of worn transmission oil. In the live data it says oil life is 0%.

Oil/filter was changed at 100k. Car is currently at 160k. I even dropped the mechatronics to replace the seals so got more oil out of that too and it sat 40 hours with no pan, etc. Checked levels using proper technique of checking temp is over 30c, etc.

So lifted the car today and even dumped oil cold to get about 3l out of it before refilling it to level again using proper technique. Oil looked pristine, maybe a couple shades darker than what came out of the bottle but largely still transparent and a strong red tint. Nothing like the oil I pulled at the 100k fill. And its def pulling from the pan since I was able to put a ton of oil back in while running/shifting, etc.

Transmission still runs well, shifts as well as the GM transmission is going to shift, etc. Anyone have any clue? All I have found is people saying "Ive seen that with low oil levels" but that isnt my case, especially not now. But the code always immediately comes back.

There's a job you do in ISTA that gets rid of it.

It's in ISTA, and I found after I reset it my transmission switched gears smoother

See MEGA link in attached pdf. ISTA resets AT fluid wear COUNTER. It's NOT just "Clearing" the 578E Code. As you say, code cannot be "cleared".

It can't, on the GM one at least. I did email and he did offer to help but I managed to get ISTA installed and sort it out.

It actually triggered me to put the tools on my newish laptop instead of having to deal with this ancient dell with XP I had been using. Now I just need to figure out how to get the Ducati and Guzzi tools running on win10 too.

Do you already have the bimmergeeks tools running on the laptop? You need that setup, etc to have the driver and code in place for the cable.

If you already have the bimmertools plugged in and working then you can follow this guy to get a lay of the land, you should at least be able to read the car and get the list of modules:

Admittedly the link I posted the instructions arent as clear since it starts once you have the tranny module open. Once i get some free time again I can probably take some screenshots and whatnot to show you how to get there.

For gbalthrops thread the important part is actually the 3rd paragraph:

For ANY of ~ 20 Control Units (Modules) in your vehicle, you can view such a screen.
Here's Menu Sequence to view EGS module page; OR select any other Module;
Open "Control Unit List" (or Tree): Operations > ReadOutVehData > ID W-O VehTest Button;
When Control Unit Tree Screen appears, Click Tab: Control Unit List;
At Control Unit List, Double-click Module/Control Unit you want to connect to;
OR, you can highlight Control Unit, on either List or Tree, and Click "Call Up ECU Functions" button;

Follow the video to get it loaded and then you just highlight the EGS module from the list (or tree) and choose "Call up ECU functions" and that gives you the pop-up from his thread. to read the oil life I think it was under general and then to reset it the option was under drivetrain.

See the four Links in the following thread for pdfs related to Diagnostic Software Downloads, INPA basics, ISTA basics, and some random IHKA Module tests for Flap operation, Refrigerant Pressure, Evaporator Temp, etc.
https://www.bimmerfest.com/threads/p...tware.1440758/

Hope to add some additional pdf's to that list in next several months.
Anyone with a specific question on HOW to use INPA or ISTA to do a particular task, please ask. It's just a matter of getting started, and the more you do, the easier it gets. Don't let the German scare you in INPA, as it (INPA) provides GREAT Data.

Thanks. I did download and install the tools from Bimmergeeks. But I also went thru all the convoluted steps of moving folders and such during ISTA/INPA install. I tried to follow a few threads on here to do it. It could be the cable I am using or could be the way I installed it all. I am using an ancient laptop running Win 10, its pretty slow but I can start ISTA and connect to the car and after that seems I cannot do anything else.

But you are able to use INPA to read the car?
By connect to the car can you do the Identification thing where it takes about 30 seconds to read the car and then returns with like your VIN, specs, mileage, etc? Because if youre getting to that point its def talking to the car.

If youre there then we can probably talk you through the rest.

[NOT sure what you mean here?? Unless I MIS-recollect, there is NOTHING to move in the INPA/BMW Standard Tools Install. Step #3 in txt file is "Move 'Rheingold' folder to c:\program files (x86)." Steps #4 & #5 create, move & rename shortcut for IstaGUI/ISTA for ease of startup.] I tried to follow a few threads on here to do it. There is ONE undocumented issue with proper install of the MEGA ISTA+/ISTA(D) download. To be able to connect to/ communicate with the Vehicle, you have to make the following change in program settings AFTER installation:

Change "Interface type" to "Ediabas default settings (ediabas.ini)"
1) Click wrench/spanner icon in Toolbar at TOP of screen;
2) "Administration" Dialog Box opens when wrench icon is clicked;
3) Click on "VCI Config" Tab in Administration dialog box;
4) Under "Interface type:" in VCI Config, click top radio button: "Ediabs default settings (ediabas.ini).
If some other "Interface type", such as Dealer organisation, was previously selected, you should NOW be able to connect to vehicle.

See the Section at END of "ISTA Fault Memory" pdf: "VIII, Saving/Posting ScreenPrints:", for procedure to save INPA or ISTA Screens so we can all SEE what your screen shows. That is the BEST way to solve issues. If something appears NOT to work as intended, simply save/post Screenprints of:
(1) Screen where you made a selection that did NOT appear as expected (didn't connect in this case), AND
(2) Screen that appeared with error message or did NOT display expected data.

If you show us THOSE Screens, we can probably suggest a proper "fix".

Thank you! I will take a look at it again this week. I probably should order a proper cable for my E9x cars. Any good ones on Amazon? or just get the Bimmergeeks?

I'm sure there are but one advantage on the bimmergeeks one is they are famous for responding to email and helping.

Actually when I posted this thread I emailed and the response was "protool doesn't support it for this transmission but if you have a laptop I can remote in and show you."

So keep that in mind when thinking of who pockets you're lining, bezos or a guy who might be walking you through it on a Sunday.
