Mountain Bike - Wanted

Is anyone looking to sell a mountain bike ? I am looking to get into biking, predominately because my little'n has now started to get in to it.

I am currently trawling ebay for the right steed, but it is starting to my head in. Looking at names such as Marin, Cannondale, specialized, Orange etc. £500 budget

There is a cracking bike in halfords (dont laugh)
Has all the decent parts on it. Front shocks and full hydrolic disc brakes and its reduced from £500 down to £250

Better spec than a lot of the bikes I have been looking at for £500 but with better names

With a budget of £500 have a look at Trek or Specialized in a hard tail. Evans cycles are good

Dosent that basically mean you pay for it from your salary pre tax?, the bikes aren't actually cheaper from the shop are they?

And if you do have to get a bike through Halfords on a Cycle To Work scheme don't despair, the Boardman bikes really are cracking good value

Look for a well-specced hardtail for your budget.

What size frame are you after? This is a good build for the money

A quick trawl through Ebay (some might be pushing the budget)..

You save the vat and the Some tax and NI as it comes off your gross. I used Pauls Cycles for mine, got last years Cindercone for peanuts.

Perfect time of year to get a sale bargain as bike shops start to discount and suppliers sell off end of line clearance to the bike shops.

Ride to Work scheme will save you £££'s. A £1000 bike could be yours for just over £500. Monthly deductions from your pre tax salary saves you money. Just bought a Trek 6500 this year on the scheme and is a great all round bike.

Also try Evans, Wiggle, Chain Reaction for good end of line clearance deals. For £500 don't bother with full suspension. The rest of the bike spec will be compromised. Hard tail, front suspension and disc brakes is what to aim for. Trek, Specialised or Orange are my personal choices but any big name make good bikes for this money. Not a fan of Halfords or their bike set up. They may be the UK's largest bike seller but the majority of the UK don't know what they are buying.

Would you buy a new bike for £500 or a second hand bike for £500 which is year old and was circa £800 new ?

I'd buy a year old £800 bike for £400

If it looks as good as new, not left in the shed covered in mud after each ride and serviced then shouldn't be a problem.

I would buy a new bike. Both my mountain bikes have taken a bit of a battering and i wouldnt buy one second hand unless it was totally mint.

AS someone else said go hardtail at £500.
Have a browse through the bikes in my link above, loads of good ones. Dont be put off by names you havent heard off ive had loads of bikes and currently have a 3k Commencal bike, its the best put together bike ive ever had.

First time ......... then go for a 1, or 2 year old bike that is used, but in good nick.

In a year or two you will then know what to do.

I would build my own then
