No, don't do it. Window cleaner doesn't have any lubricants that will allow the clay bar to glide. You'd basically be rubbing sandpaper into your paint.
Use quick detailer or clay lube as you should. |

Most glass cleaners specially formulated for car care do not have ammonia in them. If it says tint-safe, it's safe to assume it's ammonia-free.
Window cleaner doesn't harm auto paint. It's actually useful for removing polishing oils in place of IPA. |

Window cleaners are formulated with either a solvent or alcohol, neither will provide the necessary surface lubrication, this type of product which will negatively impact detailer's clay causing it to soften and stick to the paint or disintegrate rendering it ineffective.
A better solution would be to use (as already suggested) car wash concentrate |

I'm a pro detailer and I use proper clay bar lube. I just saw another pro detailer on another thread use window cleaner as clay lube and I freaked out. I just wanted to make sure this wasn't a horrible popular thing people are doing out there.

He knows what he is doing, and he is doing it for a reason.
While you clay with a clay lube, you are using something that will add slickness to the paint which then as to be removed prior to paint correction work via either another wash, or an IPA wipedown. By using glass cleaner, he is effectively claying and leaving the surface bare and ready for the paint correction process right away. Its not the end of the world, and no need to freak out. Besides, the marring from the claying is NOWHERE near as deep as the scratches and damage already instilled in the paint, so he is removing the newly created marring, if any, with the subsequent compounding stage anyway... would you do it for a clay and wax job, no. Can it be done prior to a two or three step correction, yes. |
