I think its smoke and mirrors. I found this link from Pennzoil and it says 5w30 euro is LL-01.
What you said makes sense,
I think BMW told Pennzoil to remove LL-01 designation because they were loosing sales in the North American market . They probably dropped Castrol cuz they were getting aftermarket sales and wouldn't remove ll-01 in NA.

Pretty much what I think. Not to put too fine a point on it, but oil is oil in most cases (with some differences), and it's not like BMW engines are made with some kind of superior technology and alien components that require some kind of "LL-01"secret mixture to avoid locking up the engine.

I use Motul 8100 simply because it's supposed to be a damn good engine oil. I don't use O'Reilly's-branded generic oil simply because it very likely isn't as good, and I'm not willing to risk finding out.

Totally agree. LL simply stands for LongLife, meaning you can run the car with it for an extended interval before the next oil change without the oil breaking down to an extent that the engine suffers, but who does that if you want to keep your engine going for years on end? Just change oil at a minimum of twice a year if you're using a good synthetic oil (not necessarily LL-01 or whatever) and do upto 15k miles a year. That's my rule of thumb for my 4 bimmers and no problems at all in 20 years of owning bimmers.

I looked at the 5w40 pennzoil euro today at parts source and it showed it as ll-01 on the back of the jug. I would have gotten it but dont want to run w40 weight yet.
I only got the car a short while ago and dont want to mess things up in anyway .
Still monitoring stuff as I dont know the maintenance history of the car but so far I'm liking what I'm seeing.
Did a 600km run, other day driving civil at 110km ( that was hard todo) and averaged 7.7l per 100km and running at engine temp of 90c or 194f.
For an 08 335i with 102k on it, I think that's pretty good.
Now when I take the same return trip hammering from 140,-160 I come in around 10l per 100km.
I'm quite impressed with this car and wanna keep it for quite a while.

Castrol Edge is a confusing product at times. It comes in various styles of bottle and can vary depending on which country you buy it from.

LL04 should only be used in petrol engines fitted with particulate filters and in regions where the fuel quality is sufficient according to BMW, eg. some parts of Europe.

The latest generation of B series engines are coming out with petrol particulate filters and will require LL04 to ensure maximum PPF service life. Due to the lower SAPS content of LL04 oils, it shouldn't be used in engines which don't require it.

I would just return it if possible? Generally I like to stick to BMW 5W-30, or Pentosin unless there are extenuating circumstances such as cold climate or what have you. Both are LL01.

Damn my average is like 14L/100km what am I doing wrong. It's winter so I don't even floor it that much right now? I do run 0W-40. That's why I was curious and wanted to run 0W-30 but I'm sure 0W-40 helps a bit with oil consumption.
