Ignition coils

I plan to change my spark plugs . I've changed it once at the 100,000 km mark. It's fast approaching at 200,000 km. I've never changed my ignition coils before but I am debating on doing this for the first time. Any suggestions or recommendations on changing the ignition coils? Is it necessary if I have no faults ?

A coil or coils will likely fail before too long. It would be valuable preventive maintenance for you to change out coils given the mileage you note. For a stock vehicle, go to FCP Euro, select your vehicle, do a search for "ignition service kit". If vehicle is has been modified, you may want to consider NGK spark plugs, depending on the extent of mods. Very easy DIY job.

The jury's out. There's the preventive maintenance school and the 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it' school. You could always buy a new set in readiness (I suggest BMW dealer as you'll get the very latest iteration - they've been updated over the years) and hold them 'in stock' in case of failure...

Just my five penn'orth...

Any thoughts on the new updated Delphi ignition coils vs the tried and true Bosch ones?

I would go with NGK coils they seem to be newly available on rockauto. Check part numbers on ngksparkplugs.com.

Delphi has poor review so on Amazon. I had to change my Bosch with Bosch. Before I found the now available NGKs.

Change to NGKs after you have coil problems. Not before. I do preventative maintenance on ATF filters but. Not on coils.

I haven't experienced coil problems yet. Just was planning to do preventative replacements and found out there's multiple brands available. I think my stock coils might have been Bosch/BMW (original coils from factory).

Delphi are the most up to date version.
That's what i did, knowing this is a very common failure point, didn't feel like chasing a coil from cylinder to cylinder....

+1 on Delphi. The NGK coils don't have the external heat shielding like Delphi...

I think the NGK coil part #U5055 stock#48705 has a metal shield.

I think on RealOEM the delphi's are the current recommended model of coil. I'm a bit wary of them since they are made in China, but if BMW has a reason to move away from Bosch I suppose that's good enough for me

Get Bosch coils and NGK spark plugs. You can get them on eBay for about less than most other places.

I'm actually debating between NGK and Delphi coils. Both have the metal shield. Delphi OEM I believe .

Mine came from the factory with Bosch. Replaced them with Bosch. Both sets have no integral shields, but separate ones you insert into the tube.

Delphi is not a quality name in my book. For me next time would be NGK.

Have you ever dealt with RockAuto and their overpriced shipping charges? Certain parts come from one location while another comes from somewhere else. As for Ebay, you are protected with Buyer Protection. I've had dealings with bad sellers and my money was refunded rather quickly.

Same thing. They are cheap enough I just did mine when I did the plugs last.

There is the whole "dont fix it until it breaks" thing but having your engine start to throw codes, run poorly and rattle like a diesel when you are hundreds of miles from home is no fun.

My Delphi coils were made in turkey. And they seem far more robust than the original Bosch.

my 2 cents, replace coils and Plugs at the same time and be done with it rather than worrying which cylinder is miss firing due to plugs or coils.

delphi or eldor.
some members here who are tuned stated that BMW has now moved to Eldor brand but have not made it official yet.
BUT for certain cars BMW is pushing Eldor.

I would stick with Delphi instead of Bosch.
