Exactly, seems like an unlikely oversight by the engineers though. They picked the belt based on the specified friction force required to spin the compressor. So why did the force required increase?

If it didn't increase they would have discovered this in the design/testing phase or immediately after they started delivering cars?
Just thought it was very coincidental that the belt required more tension AND the damper fails earlier than should be designed because of the A/C load.

Adding myself to the list; I just fixed this over the weekend. It was not that bad of a DIY, hardest part was getting the AC belt back on without over tightening the crank bolts. Mik325tds's DIY was more than helpful, in and out within a hour.

Ive asked this a few times but never really got an answer. I see m3s m5s and 335s using aluminum crank pulley. Can this be an option for us, as aluminum is a lot less drag and frees up HP. Or is it not a good idea for diesels as for the vibration of the rods/crank vibration. I've had them in my Stangs and they worked great with KENNE BELL SC

If its not, i see in Germany a lot of guys there use the Continental crank pulley, but seems hard to find in the US. In UK it's used also. In UK and Germany it sells for $228

now that we are in summer and this discussion is heating up (no pun intended), I wanted to see where my HB stands in terms of life. I have found some cracks with what the scoping cam allowed me to. I have attached the pictures.

it looks like it has some cracks around the middle part and some wear on the meaty part of the balancer, as the pictures show. I have used auto adjustment on the pictures so the wear isnt as easy but the zigzagging patterns on the outer part of the meaty section is actually hairline cracks.

I have already placed an order as a precaution (waiting for the price match response) online for the whole kit incl Febi, belts and bolts.

I definitely want to get the fluidamper balancer. do you guys think the balancer in the pictures would get through by the time we get the fluidampers??
I have 107K as of now.

Well considering the fluidampr should be released sometime between today and never, im guessing that damper wont last. That thing looks like its one wrong turn from full separation.

Price match the ecs with fcpeuro... It took me 3 business days to nyc area, came from cali.
Fcp lifetime replacement. Fluid dampr looks nice but without a time frame I figured do it before I get stuck. My cracks were minor aging compared to yours.

I have 104k, but I suspect it was mostly highway driven from the previous owner records.

thanks a lot for the comments and in light of all, I have ordered the whole kit with belts and bolts from fcp euro by price match. thanks for the tip robnitro. I was hoping my balancer would make it for a few more months until we get the Fldmpr; but after I checked the pictures from Mik325tds's thread, I saw that my balancer has already one foot in the grave, maybe an arm too. So I may have to replace it very soon as I will be taking a 2000 mile drive for vacation in early august.

knowing myself, I probably will end up getting the fluidampr one too as I want to keep this car for some time.

(Sorry to bring up an old thread in case this info now resides somewhere else).

Doing some research on the HB replacement, as mine failed today while at work and left me hanging, but thankfully I was in the work parking lot and parked the car there until I tow it tomorrow.

rmeauropean seems to have some good prices on Contitech belts (listed as OEM) and Corteco HB (also listed as OEM), any feedback on whether I should change these at this stage too, or just do the HB for now and revisit if needed? thanks.

My 2011 335D has 77xxx miles on it. Adding myself to the bottom of this list.

My day has come as well. 2010 335d with 77XXX miles on it. Adding myself to the bottom of this list. Weather has been super hot for the past few weeks. Started the car, got a charging error light. Burning rubber smell. Loss of power steering. Turned off AC and cranked up the heat, power steering came back and drove it straight to the mechanic. Replacing with the Corteco. Also going to change out the 2 belts while I have it all out and the Drive Belt Idler Pulley since it squeak when I spin it.

I replaced mine at 80k just as preventative maintenance and this is what I found when I removed it. Looks like it was about to fail on me. I replaced it with the FAI pulley along with the clutched alternator pulley.

Garage List
BB_cuda - I guess you can add my "new" E90 to the list.
It had HB replaced at 110K by the previous owner tlapinsk

I will inspect my E70 this week. Last time I checked was couple years ago, at 75K and it was fine. Since then I installed Provent, which will probably add an hour of work to the HB replacement process

Question: The community recommendation is to go fluidampr or stay with the BMW stock kit?
