Generic double DIN sat nav units

I am looking to add sat nav to my partners car. She has a new shape polo, at first I thought of just buying a std OEM one, but VW units are so outdated, I started looking around and came across this
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/New-7-Car-DVD-...1%7C240%3A1318

Now the question, What MAP data do these units use, tomtom by any chance, or is it some one of generic map data, that I will never see an update again. Anyone got any ideas/experience

The VW units are really good, touchscreen, SD cards, take an ipod and add value to the car.
they go cheap on ebay too and are completely plug and play.

I dont know what double DIN stands for. But 300 odd quid on a satnav?!

I have a generic PDA and have installed tomtom on that. Total cost £30..

You can also buy a generic Navigo for £50 and install it on that.

I'm not advocating piracy or whatever. But 300 odd quid on a satnav is way too much £££

They are alternatives to in-dash anyway..

gizze, those are the new generation ones, they only fit in the new golf/passat/touareg. The new polo still uses the "square satnav) unit that came out with the MK4 golf, Its CD based and uses a CAN bus system.
Donster, well the way I am looking at it is, she wants bluetooth, satnav, MP3 functionality. This unit provides all that in one tidy unit for £300
A parrot, MP3 and satnav bought as stand alones would be a messy install and probably cost more than that individually

Looks like it will do the job you want, and besides will still be worth a few quid when you have finished with it.

I would defo double check you have enough space behind the dash - it sure does look a huge unit with a lot of wires to tuck away safely. A lot of cars have double din head units, but when you remove them they are 'stepped' in shape instead of a huge big block.

Just a thought?

You can get some nice single DIN units with pop up 7" screens that do all those things for similar money. They also play DVDs and have the option to attach a rear camera.

Try Car Audio Direct if you are interested.

HAve you considered one of the kenwood double din units? Alittle more epxensive but you can add ipod, they do bluetooth, you can get a digi TV module, play your DVD's etc?

I think they start at £500. They come highly recommended looking at the reviews on the web.

Double DIN basically means its double the size of a single slot head unit. Im also looking into aftermarket sat nav/entertainment units that are double din. Im very interested in the Pioneer AVIC-F900BT but havent seen one in the flesh yet. Anyone know of this unit?
