Always used 0W30 in my 335i. Believe BMW did the same at service. The litre I bought from BMW was certainly 0W30 Titanium FST. I've just bought a load more from ECP!

Op stated £20 a bottle, how big a bottle? If op is saying the offer is £20 for 4 litres then yep that's a great deal, but you can't buy it with your club card points, can you & anyway £9.99 a litres a good price & is better than £14 a litre which is the normal price

Castrol 5w30 has been used in mine since new & it used to be recommended by castrol but they recently changed it to 0w30 for the n54. I believe from reading castrols bumpf that it works slightly better from cold than the 5w. Maybe I'll put the 0w in next time, just depends if it's on offer in tesco or sainsburys

From what I understand castrol used to recommend 5w30 which used to be LL04 approved, since it has changed to "titanium FST" it seems to have lost the LL04 approval on the back. Since then caatrol has recommended the 0w30... That's for my n57 anyway.
Occasionally Amazon have some good prices on oil, worth signing up on "camelcamelcamel" as a price tracker... Set a price you want and it sends and email once reduced. Almost always beats the supermarket prices. Also has a previous price graph: http://uk.camelcamelcamel.com/Castrol-EDGE-Engine-Oil-0W-30/product/B000R9TTS8 |

So... I Emailed Castrol for clarification on the 5w30 losing the LL-04 branding. Here is the answer:
Thanks for the email. Since the introduction of the Titanium formulation BMW have moved the goalposts with their tests meaning that you cant formulate an oil now that meets both the requirements of BMW and VW in the same oil - hence the EDGE 5W-30 LL does not carry LL04 approval. We normally suggest the EDGE 0W-30 now for BMW However there is light at the end of the tunnel - as your car is not a brand new one asking for the latest LL04 spec ( I assume this from your comment saying last 4 years ) ) - the EDGE 5W-30LL will still cover the old LL04 approval so I wouldn't worry about it in your car, although the 0W-30 would be better as it has enhanced cold temperature performance. |
