There is no typical 3 Series owner. Even BMW Marketing admits this, and I'm sure it makes their jobs tough.

Demographically, it seems a bit lumpy. You have the main distribution at late 20's, early 30s who I presume have the appropriate salary for this type of vehicle. Given average salaries for the positions listed, its probably a bit of stretch financially but then again you don't buy an E92 unless you're an enthusiast. I know some will argue with the "stretch" comment, but keep in mind that Americans, on average, spend more than they make (aka negative savings rate). So....the average American is stretching in any case.
Then you have some outliers in the older age range who are either sensible financially and don't buy the AMG55 when they can afford it but rather get plenty of enjoyment out of the E92 or they hit their peak earnings a bit later than most. Then of course you have the young kids who, presumably, have rich parents who buy the car for them. Possibly there are some independently wealthy college kids (some?) but I surmise most of them are sending the bill home to mammy and pappy. How's that for generalization? It's sure to piss some people off, but that's how you average things out from a marketer's point of view. I'm not a marketer, but I hire them all day and have heard plenty of their pitches. If you're a marketer, does this sound about right? |
