spoolin55...did you ever fix that noise...to me it sounds like the compressor on the a/c kicking on/off or very loose pulley?
my e90 with 120,000 miles makes the exact same sound as the OP...and has made it for at least 40,000+ miles. I have found that it is more obvious in cold weather. I have also noticed that I run a can of Techron it seems to quiet down those noises......try it. |

That's normal. It has something to do with some sort of evap pressure release valve. It's been talked about on this forum before. Dealership won't do anything about it

Does it sound like this?
You can really hear it at about 17-20 sec mark. If so, it is your accessory belt tensioner. An accessory belt kit with all the goodies from ECS is like $150. I took apart my tensioner afterwards and it was very sticky. Lots of resistance on it but it wouldn't spring back well at all. The noise was gone when I replaced all that stuff.

Lol. It's just lifter tick and happens all the time on virtually every 3.0L I6 BMW I've ever owned. My N54 335i does this for a minute or so every cold start but not usually once warm. Nothing to worry about... It ain't a Hyundai, these performance cars have their nuances.

Mine makes the same ticking noise in the original video randomly as well. No codes or anything so I assume its ok.

Just had this problem. It IS an issue and it is not wastegate ext. The sound started for me today however, it did not subside. I looked on here and didn't really find any solutions. I drove a bit more and my steering wheel got heavy so thought power steering pump. After that parked the car, popped the hood and smelt hot plastic.
I looked around and I have a pulley totally disconnected from the block. Now that the pulley is totally off the block I don't hear the same clicking noise that we listen to on the videos on this form, instead, I hear the squeaking sound of a slipping belt. I still don't know exactly which pulley fell off because I have not yet looked in there with detail, I just see a pulley totally detached with the belt hanging off. With that being said, I do suspect that it is the pulley for the power steering pump. I can't speak for all cars, but if you're hearing this sound then its likely that your pulley is coming loose and that the pulley itself will come off. Hope this helps. |

So this has started to happen to me. I've owned the car for 70k miles (currently at 115k) and never heard this noise. This is much louder and terrible sounding then any n54 noise. The noise goes away after about 1500-2000 rpm. One weird thing I noticed, if I am stopped, and turn the steering wheel the sound goes away.
I tried using a stethoscope to locate the noise, with no noise. I will report back when I get the car on the Jack's and check under the car. |

Quick update: I took the belt off and turned the car on. Sound is gone! So I know it has to ether be my power steering pump bearing, or my alternator itself (just replace the alternator pulley)

Any time you can change sound by turning a steering wheel its most always accessory pulley issues.

I'll bet that if you fire up the AC it will get rid of the sound as well. My N54 just started the ticking that the OP mentions. I'm also getting random VANOS codes and limp mode. Looks like I'm replacing both VANOS solenoids since cleaning them hasn't worked....hopefully that fixes all my issues.

Any updates on this, new turbos and having a wastegate type tick, its not the turbos got those checked, not the lifters or injectors, when i cold start or after the car is warm it ticks for about 30-45 seconds, if i step on the gas within those 30 seconds it goes away but comes back after those 30-45 secs its gone, until i start the car again never while driving upshifting or downshifting

It is most likely the Camshaft seals that have to be replaced (Vanos, not the soleinoids )
https://www.realoem.com/bmw/enUS/sho...diagId=11_3750 Look at item #2. These seals were made out of metal and they used to cause so many ticking problems, bmw upgraded them to teflon ones. When they are bad, they won’t allow enough oil to go to the valve timing gears, hence the ticking noise and when the oil is warm enough it gets passed them and oils up the timing gears and the noise disappears. You can watch this for more details Easy fix |

That one sounds actually like the evap ticking... it will go on and off, should not be of concern?

ticking/cranking noise
For the ticking/cranking noise that comes and goes check out the below purge valve that makes the same noise in the original video when worn...
