Another update,
This is working away on the E90 with the carbon boot like a treat. However I cannot get the single spring to open the metal OEM boot past 50%. So working on a second spring which will have to be mounted onto the hinge. I will keep you all posted, will test the spings on my E46 first (getting them custom made for the job), and if it works ill need a test E90 =) (it will involve installing a ball joint onto the hinge). But the bump stops are a go!!! |

I'll send James (Scottfree3) a message to get him to update you. It's been working great on my carbon boot lid since the sprung bump-stops were installed

Hi guys, sorry I got no e-mail notifications...thanks Paddy for keeping me posted.
I cannot get the e46 kit to work with the standard e90 bootlid as it is too heavy. I am looking at a different design. However I need to get the springs made specially which takes 2-3 weeks and Christmas delayed it even more. Afaik my next set are due in tomorrow for the e46. I'll need to get 4 retaining plates mechined and then fit and test. If it is successful I will get a set made for the e90 and test on a local car. If that works I'll put into production and we will be good to go. I have a picture on my phone of what it will look like but can't upload for some reason.... |

Before Christmas I tried a small spring that goes on the hinges. I left this idea as it ment drilling and tapping the hinges which is difficult and not easy. I then moved onto a long spring which covers the full strut. I got a few different sizes, lenghts etc over the last few months and none of these worked right. Then I used a smaller spring inside the bigger one. This worked however looked really ugly and the spring would bind and sound awful. Now I am looking at using one of the origional springs for the E46 kit and a long spring working together. This is working better but the big spring is bending and failing after about 3 weeks of use. So now I am waiting on another set of springs to be made, sent to me, installed and tested for strength, lenght, compression ratio, durability, fitment etc. If all these parameters comply I need to source a cover to make it look good and to stop the spring from bending (I think I have this sourced, all depends if the spring is strong enough). This design also requires lathe work as I need aluminium housings and stoppers to hold the springs in line. Unfortunately it is a very slow process (unless everyone buys carbon bootlids ). I am slowly getting on top of it, however if I need an extra 10mm lenght to the spring I need to wait 2 weeks for it to be made so I can only do 2 tests per month. Secondly the price will increase as there are double to parts required (I have not checked the price yet, but id imagine at the very least £75-£85). On the positive side it will work with old struts (new struts might be needed if the older ones are totally shot) and it will be a very simple "slide this over your existing strut and tighten". If the new springs arrive this week I will try get a prototype running at the weekend. Thanks for your LONG wait |

UPDATE:
Good new gentlemen. The e46 prototype (which the e90 version will be modeled from) is working. New upper and lower spring mounts and a Stainless Steel cover still needs to be fabricated how the boot is opening smoothly and is easy to close. If all goes to plan the complete prototype should be ready end of next week at which stage the e90 version will commence prototyping. |
