Its an electronic throttle body.

Diesels generally dont need throttles, but sometimes they are fitted to provide some extra features. Some cars for instance will shut the throttle when you turn the engine off, which makes it stop much smoother. Sometimes its used for EGR, by closing the main inlet path and thus forcing the engine to draw air in from the EGR system instead.

I dont know what the M57 uses it for (probably both), nor if it flicking open and closed like that is normal.

First port of call; scan the DDE for fault codes to see if it sheds any light!

Well if it was not supposed to be doing that, the ECU would (Should?) have noticed and produced a fault code.

So as theres no fault code relating specifically about the throttle, then i would guess that the ECU is intentionally opening and closing the flap.

Its maybe related to the Air flow meter fault in some way?

looking online the airflow meter and throttle body thing seem to be related?

not sure if I need a new one or I can take that old one out and sort that thing from moving like that?

I've seen this once before on m57,the feedback potentiometer in the throttle body was faulty causing it to constantly switch end stops.i don't know if you can read it with aftermarket diag stuff but you can see the readings with ISTA.

so do you think ill need a new throttle body? or can this one be taken off and adjusted or something to stop it moving like that?

No,there not serviceable. If it's the same fault I had before you can see the requested % vs the actual % and they where wildly different/constantly cycling. If you have a warranty then get them to sort it.

Garage List
"Not serviceable" usually means you need a new one mate.....I hate it when electronic stuff shits itself for no apparent reason, and usually at great expense.

It acts like more of anti shudder valve and starves the cylinders of air when you turn off the engine to stop an aggressive turn off as its diesel... and decreases the air when idling.. if your engine shudders when you turn it off then it may need replacing. A faulty air flow sensor could mean that it was getting too much air/flow was unregulated... and started to give up or struggle. I would start with checking if you shudder when you turn off and if not then replacing the mass air flow sensor/diagnosing it... other than that... my mechanical knowledge with diesels is pretty crap and where are you Old Grey Stevey Wonder?

I would say it was faulty by the look of that vid.Its a throttle body in the sense it's a butterfly valve in a housing. It shuts off for clean stop of the engine and during dpf runs etc.Air mass readings will have no bearing on it as it's not operated in relation to air flow, just engine shut down.We can wait for everyone to chime in with their views of course but what do I know I'm only a BMW diag tech.😫
