Grinding noise when turning right

Hey guys,

A few weeks ago I made a post stating I was getting a grinding noise when turning left within the first 15 minutes of driving or so and then it would disappear. This noise is metal on metal coming from the passenger side (almost like the rotor is rubbing on the dust shield). I since then took my front brakes apart and serviced them, I still have a lot of pad left and the rotor looks good.

After doing this service I get the grinding noise while turning right within the first 15 minutes of driving, the noise eventually goes away as I drive more and more. The thing is I only drive my car a couple week nights to do some errands and on the weekends (I use my gf's car for work).

Has anyone ever experienced this before? I really don't think this is an issue with a wheel bearing or driveshaft as the noise would be constant and would not leave after a little driving.

If the car sits for a while and its moist outside this could just be surface rust on the rotor. If you drive the car for a bit you are saying the noise goes away ?

That's what I figured as well with the rust on the rotors the first time this occurred but it seems to be happening more often than I've ever experienced before. Yeah, after driving for a little while the noise goes away and I try to recreate it by swerving and taking right turns and nothing. Park the car a day or two and as soon as I start to drive it begins again. I'll probably inspect again this weekend and take a closer look at the pads but this will be the third time I take it apart and everything seems to be good. I'll take some pics as well and post them this weekend to see if anyone sees something that I'm missing.

Your not driving enough . That doesnt sound like an issue to me. I drive my car daily so never hear such noises but my other car that happens when i dont drive.

LMAO dude welcome to my boat. I lifted my car (the 335) up like a million times and could not find a damn thing wrong.

WED I'm taking it for some walnut blasting (indy shop that knows its shit).. I already told the tech that first we will play "what the fuck is that noise this time" game before we do anything else. Check this thread WED evening and I'll update you to what he finds.

Lol I agree I don't drive it enough but I find that if it sat for a week or more then I'd understand but I drive it at least every second day for errands and I would assume that would be enough to clear whatever debris is on there but I guess not... Next week I'll take it for work everyday and see what the result is.

Update!

Alright, so i took my passenger side front brakes apart to check what was making the noise. My rotor and pads seem perfectly fine "pics below", when I pulled the rotor off i think i found what makes this noise; from the pictures below you'll notice that there's a shield surrounding the wheel flange on the hub (please correct me of this is not the correct term) rust builds up in between the flange and the shield and i suspect that as we're turning the weight of the vehicle just makes it enough for these to rub together which then makes the noise.

I cleaned the rust off from what i could access and i tried to pry the shield away from the flange, the noise did reduce a little but i still have it, im contemplating on cutting it completely off....

Let me know what you guys think.

I went ahead an cut some of that shield back and im still getting a barely noticeable grinding noise. I have been driving my car a lot more so that could be minimizing it over time but im really stumped. I'll report back if it gets bad again.. Time will tell

*EDIT* I no longer have a noise but I'm not sure if it's because of the shield I cut back or because I've been driving my car a little bit more... like mentioned above, I'll report back in the future if this comes up again.

Hey guys, little update! That "shield" definitely isn't the reason i was getting the noise. I was driving today and could still hear a faint noise, as i drive more the noise becomes less aggressive but im really stumped...

I had this exact same noise when going around corners. Turns out that it has something to do with my fan in my climate control system. Fan comes on highest when you first turn on the car to adjust temperature, so it is loudest. Turn off your fan and see if it goes away. I would bet a dollar it’s the same thing. Now that I know I could care less.

It's not my fan because I don't have it on when producing the noise. I would imagine the fan would be more of a plastic on plastic noise rather than metal on metal? the noise I get sound like a rotor rubbing on a dust shield but the noise is barely noticeable now that I drive my car a little more....

Any chance of posting a vid to this thread, or would it be impossible to hear it?

Also, have you gotten someone to stand outside the vehicle and listen, assuming you can produce the noise at low speeds?

If that isn't an option and you need higher speeds to reproduce it, this guy can probably help you out:

I should have recorded a video of the sound when it was louder but now it's basically gone since I drive the car more often.

I haven't gotten anyone to listen standing outside either since it makes the noise when turning right at around 25-30 km's an hour, plus my gf would have no clue what to listen for lol

Lmao!! that guy is a trooper!

Also, since I cut that dust collar for nothing I have ordered another one, once that comes in I'll probably change the wheel bearing at the time and see if that was the case, I really don't think it's the bearing though.

Found where the noise is coming from, i feel like an idiot!! The grinding noise came back but now it's when i turn in both directions slowly. I finally got my girlfriend to drive the car as i sat in the passenger side, i made her do a couple turns and i can say that the noise is coming from the back passenger side!!

This whole time i thought it was coming from the front, i guess the noise would eco forward and i thought it was coming from the front, this wasn't one to self diagnose.

I'll have to inspect once i have time in the next week or so...

I got new brake pads, now rotors; e-brake checked and adjusted.. Had suspension fully inspected and the wheel hub is also in perfect condition; yet noise is still there. I also notice it when going over depression on the road at low speeds. Mechanics can't figure out wtf is wrong.

So all your brakes are good all around and you're still getting this noise... damn!! is yours coming from the front or the back?

Rear driver side.

I will also add.. Car drives perfectly, no wheel play, no vibration in steering wheel, breaks perfectly.

Had that happen after a good bath on my 328i. One would think that by now we would have rust free braking products.

Finally resolved my issue!! The noise was coming from the back passenger side brake, I ended up servicing everything on that side. I think the issue was that my outer pad was stuck into place, upon removing the caliper the pad was just stuck there. I filed down the rust on the caliper as to where the caliper contacts the pad so it can move freely as well and filed the bracket where the pads sit. I haven't had any noises since then

Where exactly was the pad stuck to? The caliper carrier/bracket or the piston?

Sorry if I'm slow on the uptake here -- just not entirely sure what you mean.

Glad you got it resolved though! You put some serious time into diagnosing that. Earned it!
