Using the top of the oil thermostat for additional cooler

Is there a reason that it seems like no one utilizes the two spots on top of the thermostat to add an additional oil cooler? It seems the popular mod is to replace the OEM cooler with a larger one or even twin coolers.

I am considering keeping my OEM oil cooler and adding a secondary cooler for the driver side fender area, but use the two connections on top of the oil thermostat and just get a M20 to -10AN adapter.

Is there any reason this is not more common?

I had considered replacing the OEM with a larger cooler, but why waste that existing capacity? And the $1300 or so for the ER dual coolers just seems to be too expensive.

Yes, it has been done before. You can make your own oil coolers, it isn't that hard. ER kits don't even use high quality cores like Setrab, so yeah, it is extremely over priced.

Yes, somewhat common. I was going to go this route as I didn't think my Dinan core was large enough (I was wrong) - I recently built a transmission cooler by splicing the return hose and mounted it in the driver side fender well.

There are mounts you can buy on ebay or elsewhere that allow you to connect AN10 lines to the stock OFH too.

Well, I ordered everything I need to run a 625 setrab off the top thermostat connections. We'll see how it works out!

yes, basically. Probably not the exact same one, but same idea. It hasn't arrived yet.

Bumping this up. Does anyone have pics, or can confirm that the top ports for the oil filter housing require an M22 fitting? I've read about people welding solutions in place, but that seems like overkill. Where did you buy this?

It is m20. I got the m20-10AN adaptor on eBay. The rest of my fittings have not come in yet, so I haven't started to put this together. But I did confirm the m20 fitting fits the top mounts. I have a low profile 90 fitting coming in, but it's still going to be tight under the hood. I might end up getting an m20 -10AN banjo that mishimoto makes. That should eliminate any clearance issues.

For anyone following alone at home- my low profile 90* fitting hasn't even arrived yet, but I went ahead and ordered that Mishimoto banjo. It will not only fit better (hopefully), but will look better as well.

So, you bought two of those, and threaded them directly into the filter housing?

I bought two of them. They haven't arrived yet. But yes, they should thread right into the top of the housing.

All my parts arrived. Just have to find some time to piece it together now. However, I'm glad I ordered the Mishimoto banjo, the other solution with the straight m20-10AN and low profile 90* fittings would not clear the hood. So, if you are not going to take the approach where you weld a bung onto your drilled out plugs, get the mishi banjo. They are like $30 each at Summit.

Post pics when you can. I am going to build my own OC setup, still trying to decide id I should replace the stock one and go with one big one, or do a dual setup.

M20 is universal or is there a thread pitch for it? M20x 1.0 or 1.25 or 1.5?

I will when I get around to it. Haven't started putting it together yet.

just a quick update on this- the mishimoto banjo bolt *just* hits the bottom of the hood. But it hits right in the meat of a support beam, which can be "adjusted".

I'm hoping to get this oil cooler pieced together maybe this weekend or next.

edit- Yes, I used playdoh to test the clearance.

It's done, fellas.

If I were to critique anything, I would make the lines a bit shorter to clean up the angles by the oil thermostat. I also still need to "adjust" the support bar on the hood. The left banjo bolt slightly contacts the support bar. All in all, it was not that difficult. I haven't but the bumper back on yet, so I guess there could still be a challenge. But it should be fine just from eyeballing it.

Total breakdown:
8 feet of -10 ptfe line (would be fine with 5 feet) $32.

$46 AN fittings.

$60 mishimoto banjos.

$206 setrab 625 oil cooler.

Maybe $15 in misc hardware for bracket.

So... $360 for essentially a dual n54 oil cooler setup.

Looks great! How did you mount the top of the new oil cooler? Can you take a pic?
