Was £295 new but i bagged it 2nd hand for £100. It has made a fairly decent improvement. They quote 203bhp or something stupid but in reality id hazard around 180-185bhp which is just enough of a boost to make the car more driveable and not 100% like a milkfloat |

Black smoke is the most common smoke emitted from diesel engines. It indicates poor and incomplete combustion of the diesel fuel. There are many causes, including…
-Incorrect timing -Dirty or worn injectors -Over-fuelling -Faulty turbocharger (ie not enough air to match the fuel) -Incorrect valve clearance -Incorrect air/fuel ratio -Low cylinder compression (eg sticking piston rings or worn components) -Dirty air cleaner -Restricted induction system (eg system too small or kinked inlet piping) -Other engine tune factors -Poor quality fuel -Excessive carbon build up in combustion and exhaust spaces -Cool operating temperatures Mines remapped rather than having a tuning box. so i'm guessing Fueling and boost is tweak. i used to get a lot of soot on hard acceleration but i think the contributing factors where my engine was running too cold (now thermostats are changed it gets toasty warm) I've highlighted the other factors i think could be the cause. Now i'm thinking its just a case of the air inlet is too restrictive to cope with the increased boost hence why there is still un-burnt diesel (creating soot) coming out the exhaust. increasing the Intercooler capacity should help this. |

Even as stock freshly serviced with both new thermostats and cleaned out egr valve with no issues my 320d m47 still chucked soot.
Mainly due to the lack of dpf and hence why bmw designed the non dpf models with downturned soot chucker |

other things could be driving style, distance travelled per journey on average? would allow soot to build up and then then when beans are applied it then blows it all out.
My daily communte consists of about 15mins of 40mph average driving so half of each journey will be running on cold start so extra fuel. |

Not sure it will actually be worth it or not. I'm looking at doing a remap and possibly a 330d cooler.
There doesnt seem to be much scope for tuning these old smokers |

Trust me.... I had the egr mapped out, and fitted the decat and combined with a few other little 'mods' its made the car alot 'livelier' to drive.
Downside is the exhaust is abit boomier under hard acceleration, and abit 'smelly' now the Cat has gone. I've not done the intercooler as I dont see the need yet... You need to change one of the ic hoses too apparently as the Inlet is a different size on the 330 ic to the 320 one. Mentioned in this thread somewhere.. Bumping this old thread whilst looking for decat possibilities, and I noted valve clearance mentioned.
I wondered if anyone knows how often this should be checked? My car is on 230k and is quite noisy. I know diesels are loud, but this seems a little more "clattery" than others I have driven. I guess this could be one of the issues. |

I'm looking at buying a 320d for my everyday commute, prices are very competitive I'm going to go see one on Saturday.
is it better to go for tuning box as opposed to remap, I've heard remaps void any warranty? |

So can anyone tell me what performance mods are best for the M47 320d in the E91? I like the idea of the intercooler, it sounds semi plug and play, especially if you can get one off ebay!
Also my cars thermostat is faulty, so the car runs about 60C all the time. Would this be bad for economy and soot? |

Intercooler upgrade is not really needed with the standard turbo in most peoples opinion.
I'm running a few extra psi through my original turbo but as its a road car and not on full boost for massive amounts of time, Its not causing any reduction in performance worth noting. Egr delete, and decat/dpf off are a definite improvement over standard though. Worth cleaning the inlet manifold out too whilst doing swirl flap blanking. Leave to soak in caustic soda overnight, then flush through with hose pipe. Comes out like new.(v messy job though!) Last edited by P14kle; 08-13-2017 at 01:59 PM.. |

OK thanks to you both. The car is Pre LCi so no DPF, but decat is worth a go. Intel already blanked and cleaned, EGR programmed out. If there is nothing else easy to do then i guess im done with the engine for now.
