Rust in wagon hatch
My wagon's rear hatch/door has rust in a half dozen places.
Has anyone tried to go through BMW for the rust guarantee? Should I just buy a good one from a local yard instead? |

I got a new one on warranty when the car was 11 years old. It only had a tiny grain of rust that was visible from the outside, so they planned to get it resprayed.
When they started dissasembling the hatch for paint, they discovered lots of rust on. the inside, so they replaced the complete hatch. I also got the hatch on my e87 resprayed and one door replaced on warranty. |

Finally got the service manager to take pictures of it. He says BMWNA might reject the repair because I let it go too long.
Which is rather frustrating, since a few years ago I tried to get it fixed and the dealer at the time told me it wasn't bad enough to warrant a claim yet. |

BMWNA rejected the repair because it was too rusty.
I complained that the service manager at BMW Boston told me to wait until it got worse (which is what led me to here), and the service manager at BMW Sudbury has gone back to BMWNA to shake some more trees. I will see what comes, but I hear that this service manager will absolutely go to bat for a customer if he feels that there's any fault within the dealership. Fingers crossed! |

How much is a used rear hatch? Given you don't have a crazy, uncommon color you might be able to find one used for a decent price.

Finding one in my color is difficult. there's one that *also* has rust (though less) for $350.
Next after that is around $500-$600 in my searches, plus shipping. Maybe I can find it for a bit less, but not a lot. Wagons are rare, so their hatches are pricey. |

warranty covered!
Picking up this older thread, but I took my 2010 328ix sport wagon to the Dreyer & Reinbold BMW dealership this morning to have them check out the rust on my tailgate. Much to my surprise I was told it will be warrantied and it's extensive enough that a new tailgate is in order. Kind of makes up for the FRM claim BMW NA denied because I installed the module myself!

Sadly, it seems like all the BMW hatches from most of the model lines have these issues. Odd they haven't learned their lesson! |

My dealer never called back, which is the same that happened 4 years ago. When I went in they said sorry nope.
I checked a few more places, still $600+ for a wagon hatch, not even in my color. Think I'm going to just wait until the engine dies and then probably get a shitty pickup truck or something :/ |

It was right along the lip that tilts into the rear cargo area and where the glass closes. Worst in the middle of the lip, but it had just started to explode in the last several months. I'd post a picture but I don't use an online service to store them.

That's a 12 year warranty, right? In the US?
Thanks to this thread, I might now start hounding my dealer about this. I've definitely got the rust thing happening...a little bit on the upper lip (inner surface) but more on the sides under that black trim part. |

Correct, 12 years here in the States. At least for cars entered into service as of 2004.
