I just purchased a 2006 330xi with 106K and it doesn't tick and has never had any engine work done. I have the full service history. Anyone have an idea percentage wise how many engines this effects? Like is it 1 in 10 or 9 in 10?

well basically its a flawed engine design, where the newer models BMW has redesigned the head to fix the problem. So technically it effects 100% of the cars its just a matter or not if you hear the ticking....the good news seems to be that this problem doesn't cause any damage to the car and is something you can leave alone if you are out of warranty for example and don't want to spend the couple thousands to fix it...someone correct me if im wrong?

I'm just wondering how many owners end up having the issue. Is it only short distance trips that drive it like they stole it types mostly? Or does it happen to everyone eventually.

dont really think driving styles and distances matter, its a flawed design thats causing the issue...some are just more noticeable that others.

hmm so brought my car in today and showed them the service bulletin, advisor seemed to be familiar of the problem and stated the first step is to replace new lifters and new ROCKERS (no idea what that is), he said in the past they would only replace lifters but it didn't fix the problem, but when replacing rockers it was a 99% fixed. He seemed to know what he was talking about and said if the noise comes back they will replace the head but this is the procedures they are told to do since i guess replacing the head is expensive. anyone hear of this before?

I went to my local dealer today and had a candid conversation about this topic with the service manage. He said over the years they have dealt with a handful of cars that had this ticking issue. His opinion was that it was not common and to not worry about it.

2009 BMW Ticking driving me crazy
SO i brought a 2009 328I with less than 17,5XX miles. The ticking started at around 18000 miles on a cold start up although was not very prominent in my garage it was turning heads at the traffic stops and in my office parking lot not the kind of attention i wanted..:-(.
The first trip to BMW showroom was lucky since they heard a faint ticking and it looked like they knew what was to be done, replaced the Lifters,I was tick free for another few weeks and it started again is my car is currently with the dealer ship and i have no idea about whats happening..this is a rant but moving on... In one of the pages i did read some one candidly saying not to drive the car less than 75 miles..that seems to be true..i like in a very small city and the max i drive this car on a week day is Home-Gym-Home,Home-office-Home all of which is less than 10 miles and in city so i never get to go above 40mph(I know such a waste) may be once in a month i do a 500 mile trip to my friends place just to enjoy my car..nothing to do with my friend. Also if this helps weather is a little cold occasionally dropping to lower 20's and usually in upper 30's the trouble started when the temp was in lower 20's..may be i should move to a warmer place and it will go away....Will keep the post updated..(I hope to get a new car like one of the guys..) I seem to have the same issue on the ticking, but dealership claims, "its normal" , ended up going to a friends shop and was told to go ahead and drop in a bit of Full Synthetic Mobile 1 oil, seems to have gone away. He told me that the Castrol oil, BMW uses can be a reason why it makes that ticking noise. Just thought I would share that info.

I've seen a N52B25 (2500cm3) for sale, but not sure if this model have this same problem (loosing oil on the lifters..) than the N25B30 (3000cm3)...
This engine fits on the BMW bolletin, as it's from 96 and it's a N52, but on the other hand, the improved new heads shown on the bolletin are just for B30, it means for the 3000cm3... Does any one have or know if this engine (N52B25 2500cm3 from 2006 E92 325i) also have this problem? Thanks |

My 2006 330i FINALLY had it's head replaced under a PUMA (CPO) case. It's been smooth quiet sailing ever since! Life am good...for now!

Thanks to the forum i brought my car in and sounded like i new somewhat what it was so they couldnt give me the run around until my cpo was up.
The car needs new lifters and rockers and wont be ready until tuesday. total cost to me thanks to you guys $50 deductible instead of thousands (or having to sell it) |
