Switching from 5w30 to 5w40

Hey guys,

I live in Florida and I was wondering if it would be better for my car (currently at 162K miles and FBO) to use 5w40 instead of 5w30.

For the past couple of years, I have used LiquiMoly 5w30 exclusively and of course, if recommended, then I would go with LiquiMoly 5w40.

Thanks for any advice.

BMWs arnt known for their forgiveness to viscosity issues.. The 4liter m3 motor has had multiple issues both the 20-50 recommeded and also lower weights that people have tried. What is the max oil temp you experience? I would only go a 40 weight if you consistently see over 245 degree oil temps.

Otherwise maybe try half and half..

I run Motul Xcess 5W-40 and I'm in the North East. For someone in hotter climates, I definitely recommend going to a 40W.

Yea, I consistently see 230-240+ temps during the day. 250ish during spirited driving.

My car also does NOT have an oil cooler.

+1. Can't go wrong with Motul X-Cess 8100 5W-40. Especially in hot climates.

Oil thermostat delete? Are you serious? I've never heard of that. Lol

That's because you don't have an oil cooler.

I had been using 5W30 in my tuned. 335xi and recently switched to Motul xcess 5w40. I haven't seen much difference between the two here in Chicago-maybe a couple degrees cooler in "normal" driving. If I lived in FL, I'd be using a 5w40, particularly if tuned..

I've done UOA on my last two changes and will on the next as well. Comparing Redline to Motul.

~238 is normal operating temp. The 40W should help a little on keeping the temps down or at least slowing down how fast they warm up.

Looking forward to that Oil Analysis. It helped a little on my car going to 40W and I have no oil cooler (yet) on my 335xi.

I did posts on my last two- one with Total Quartz 5w30 and one with Redline 5w30.

I'll definitely report back in another 1-2k miles.
