ZHP shift knob on E9X

Hey guys,

I've searched and read a ton of different posts, so I'm sure most of you are sighing and saying "not another ZHP shift knob thread"....

I just wanted some clarification. Is there a ZHP shift knob that was made for the E9X chassis? or is everyone just using the ZHP shift knob for the E46 chassis? I'm looking to buy the ZHP shift knob for my E92 328i. I'm also looking at the alcantara shift boot - anyone got pics of this in their car?

I just wanted to make sure it'll be a direct plug n play shift knob like it was on my E46. I have the sport/premium/cold weather pkgs.

Thanks!

Yup, direct plug and play. Same design and everything. As long as you have a shift boot to go with it, it'll work.

It’s plug and play. The e46 "ZHP" knob was made with both 5 and 6 speed patterns on it. I have one of each. Every BMW shift knob back to the mid 80s is the same connection. The knob comes without a boot, so you need to buy a boot that fits the e9X base (or get one of the kits that you fit yourself).

There is a guy on the net that puts an LED in this knob. Well worth the extra coin.

Got a link for where you got the alcantara boot and ZHP knob? I typically get all my OEM stuff from ECS Tuning, but they won't have the ZHP knob in stock until 8/31/2018.

Or just buy a F10 M5 manual shift knob. It's the exact same as ZHP with factory illumination

I got mine from ECS a while ago. The boot is also an official M performance part.
Try any of the parts houses... Turner, Bavauto, getbmwparts, someone’s bound to have it.

You don't need a special boot. What you do is remove the plastic clip off the stock boot, pull the boot over the shift knob so its inside out, then zip tie the boot to the lever, and install the boot again. Boom, it stays in place.

Is there an existing connector in the center console for the illumination, or does it have to be spliced in?

Perhaps it's from driving an E46 for years and dreaming of a ZHP. The first mod I did was replacing the shift knob which shortened the shifter by about two inches.

That's beautiful! I can't wait to get mine! It was my first mod in my E46

I had no issues with stock shift boot from my sport package e92. I did not have to use a zip tie or any other method to keep the boot in contact with the ZHP knob, either. Looks and works great!

Has anyone gone this route from an M Sport package car? Thoughts?

I have the perforated 'squared' M Sport knob paired with perforated leather boot. Is this knob really worth the upgrade? Surprisingly, the squared knob has grown on me.

The above picture is my M sport e93. I would never go back to the square. I guess the perf leather never did it for me. I swapped the wheel for an M3 alcantara flat bottom too.

I have the ZHP knob with my stock boot - no problems. It's a huge improvement!

You can get it here, if ECS is out: https://www.leatherz.com/collections/shift-knobs/products/zhp-short-shift-knob

Here's mine.

Sorry to revive old thread but seems to be the latest on the subject.

I have a is so the M sport perforated squared shifter and ordered the ZHP one. I'm starting to think there is no other difference than the shape of the shifter... I hope there is though.

Did you end up upgrading it?

I put one on my e91 while it was still on the turntable at BMW Welt in Munich. The presenter person looked at me like I was nutz. Has to be a record for speed of first modification. I still have the original in a box with all the delivery paperwork in my office. Probably has like 10 shifts on it, driving across the street from the factory.

I got mine from LeatherZ.com so I could get it with the 6spd pattern but no ///M. Since it's not an M3 wagon and all...

Here is my E82 with the knob and new Alcantara boot. Just be careful removing the old knob. You could knock some teeth out pulling the old one!

But its one of the most enjoyable mods I have done from a driving perspective!
