Sorry, really have no idea what I'm turning at take off in regular driving. After driving MT for awhile, it becomes a natural thing and at that point, my attention is directed towards surrounding traffic.

You're revving the engine a little too much. If you're idling at 750rpm (dead stop), the tach shouldn't go over 1000rpm when you're smoothly engaging the clutch. Continue driving the way you are and I can almost guarantee premature clutch wear.

ok, I have a problem taking turns..
one example is the most basic, lets say you are driving on local streets, going 45-55mph.. and up comes a traffic light, where you need to make a right turn... I read that you need to brake first, then put it into gear BEFORE taking the turn that way your wheels/car have the most traction or something. But my problem is, I never brake or slow myself down enough to get into 2nd or 3rd gear before the turn. So I usually end up going into neutral during the turn, and after words, shift to 2nd or 3rd gear and accelerate out. Is that wrong? another example on the freeway, let's say you are driving 80mph, and then you have to change freeways, so up ahead, there's an interchange which makes you do like a 270 degree turn with a recommended speed limit of 25mph. I can take the turn going 50mph+ if I were the only one on the freeway, but sometimes if theres a slower ass car in front of you, you are forced to slow down to 25mph. So basically my problem is this... I'm never sure of which gear to be in. What happens is, I would start to take the turn and my speed would drop to 35-45mph or even worse, down to 25mph by the time I am done with the turn while I am still in 5th or 6th gear, which makes it practically impossible to accelerate w/o downshifting. So, is it better to shift before the turn? during? or after? (damn I just read what I wrote and even I can't understand what I'm saying lol)... |

The best advise i can give you is look ahead more.. Lets say you see that traffic light, a couple of hundred feet back you should start downshifting. Until you're slow enough to turn. You should always be in gear whenever you are turning in case you need to accelerate out to miss a car or something. And as for the freeway thing same advise. Downshift to slow down for the turn. My rule of thumb is you can take most turns double the posted speed without losing control. Im not saying do this the first time you hit a turn. But get used to the turn and next time around take it faster.
good luck, be safe ![]() |

I've been reading more about lugging the engine which mostly involves driving around in low rpms. When I drive my 335i I shift from 1st gear to 2nd gear at 1.5-2k rpm, and when I get up to speed I usually cruise around at 1.5k or 2k rpm. Is this bad for the engine? I feel like it's not but it seems like from what I'm reading it maybe harmful to the engine?

If you are lugging the engine (driving in too high a gear for the speed you are going) you will feel it the car will be totally unresponsive and may even "buck". If you are getting good throttle response you are not lugging the engine. Cruising at 1.5K to 2K RPM is fine. At crusing speeds you can never really be in too high a gear. Lugging is less of an issue with cars with a wide and flat torque curve (like a 335i) CA CA

I should let my girlfriend go over this thread.
last time she drove my car she revved up to 5000RPM and dropped the clutch and the car started shaking like godzilla was doing a trex next to my car. She then got scared and slammed on the brakes. And the car stalled. Horrible night ![]()

Fantastic thread guys!
I have problems shifting at a normal speed from 1st to 2nd. To get the shift smoothly I gently drop the clutch very slowly. I can seem to shift quickly and have it be smooth. Do I need to apply some gas while dropping the clutch at the same time?

How do I get a smooth shift from 1 to 2 say if i'm at 3500k rpm in 1st and want to go to 2nd, can I just clutch in move to 2nd and quickly release or slowly release? I see people make this shift smooth but I haven't figured it out yet. Is it all in the release?

I do want to do the CDV mod, but I don't want to ruin the warranty, any fear of the warranty going away if I do???

so it's a completely free mod? Nice! What does the CDV actually do to the clutch? Make it springier? Why did BMW even put it in?
