Revisiting thread after a couple of months driving my 335i, my first MT. Process is generally going fine and MT is definitely becoming more second nature. Two questions/minor issues.
First, I encounter two very steep hills during my daily drive: one at the top of my street, where I need to pull out into traffic (have to stop at the top of the incline, check for traffic, then pull out) and a second when I pull out of my parking garage downtown seattle, which is dead center in one of the steepest hills downtown. I've got to rev the engine fairly high on these inclines to prevent a stall (still stalling it probably once a week on these hills) and I have concerns about premature clutch wear. My guess is that there's nothing I can really do other than just trying to perfect the amount of gas to give it to minimize the issue. Second, still having issues with downshifting. Try to blip the gas during the downshift but still get a noticeable jerk most times I'm downshifting for fun (to get more torque) rather than low RPMs. Exactly how much of a blip should I be giving this thing? |

If the pedal reached the floor on a 335i, you'd grossly over-rev. |

Just bringing this thread back to life a little with a video showing a racer doing double-clutch heel&toe shifting. Obviously from the sound of the transmission, it has straight cut gears and no synchros....
Here's another, but it is not as clear with regards to the view of the feet on the double clutching....

When changing gears, do u HAVE to depress the clutch all the way or can u just depress it enough to switch gears without grinding and whatnot. I ususally depress the clutch all the way for first and second since it seems like a smoother shift but from third and on i sometimes dont press it all the way. Is this ok or should I depress the clutch all the way for every gear?

i was taught to depress all the way, however people go for a "clutch stop" which is a block that prevents u from depressing all the way. i'd like to hear some thoughts too.
what's teh advantage of not pressing all the way? saving time? lol |

Do you guys know of any videos showing launches and other shifts in a 335? I've seen the M3 driving school ones but it would help me to see the shifts in my car.

As for shifting without using the clutch? No thanks. It really should read "clueless shifting." Can it be done? Yes, it certainly can. But you have to get it just right. Not getting it "just right" means grinding gears and synchros. I'd rather replace a worn cluth plate than replace the gears in the transmission.

On a steep incline, I usually use the handbrake. The e90 have hill assist and therefore I use the handbrake rarely if ever. If incline is very steep, even the hill assist may find the car move back a little. Never balance clutch and throttle, that's a clutch killer.
If using handbrake: 1stgear/declutch/apply gas and as soon as you feel the car's rear squat, release handbrake while applying more gas. You will have tendency to release clutch fast, don't give in to that temptation or you would stall car. So clutch release same, just more gas than usual. If done properly, car would not move backwards an iota even on steepest incline..... ![]()

in certain cases clutchless shifts are better than clutching. the really "necessary" example that i can think of is 18 wheelers and big trucks. when you learn they teach you to never use the clutch. in terms of cars yah it's doable, margin of error is probably bigger and the damage risk sounds higher

Second.. at 1:51 of the video, STEP 11, she has already shifted from 1st to 2nd gear, then talks about pressing the clutch while simultaneously pressing the gas at the same time... EXCEPT in the video shes simultaneously pressing the BRAKE.. LOL.. hilarious! No wonder why we have so many F'Kd up drivers out there.. tsk tsk.. Last edited by dubiousONE; 01-23-2009 at 01:47 PM.. |

I think that web site just lets people send in their own "how to" videos, and they host them. If I recall correctly, a while ago there was a "how to polish your car" video on there that was mercilessly made fun of over at autopia.org. I think this "how to drive a manual transmission" video is just as bad or worse!

position of your foot on clutch
Hello,
Relative MT newbie here. Where does everyone position your foot on the clutch pedal to get the best feel for engagement point? I tried putting entire foot on the clutch pedal, but i don't get as good of a release as oppose to putting the balls of my foot on the clutch pedal. Thanks |
