The dealers can take huge hit on this if BMW decides not to cover this under warranty and my dealer was extremely hesitant at first to even proceed.
They wouldnt proceed without authorization first.

I stopped by the dealership to speak to one of the SAs regarding the rattling. He said the rattle isn't sufficient of a complaint to request new turbos. He mentioned I'd have to throw codes and or have a check engine light of some sort in order to qualify. Have you guys had similar experiences?

My car is at the dealership having the wastegate rattle fixed -- 60K miles, but they said it would be covered if the gates were found to be defective. However, if not, they would charge me $3,000 for the disassembly/reassembly. My question was: if they are noisy as heck, aren't they defective? My adviser basically said "yes," but he made sure to qualify his answer. I called BMWNA and received about the same response. I can tell you this: if I go to pick it up and have a bill, somebody will be getting an ear full.

They may have been able to fix the noise with some tweaks to the codes. From what I have heard, that may not be a permanent solution.

My car should be ready tomorrow...waiting to see if the noise is completely fixed (and if BMWNA tries to screw me over or not).

I know that having a "tune" disqualifies a car from being warrantied but hear is a question I've heard an answer too however I'm not sure its believable.

Are pre-March 2008 N54 cars untraceable if they had a tune once installed?

i brought my car in for a HPFP check and mentioned the wastegate rattles. unfortunately i'm also at the point where they'll charge me $1500 if BMW decides to not cover the repair. I don't want to take the risk, the rattle only happens during the first minute of engine starts.

i also have an extended warranty through Route 66 (Penfed) but i'm not sure if they'll cover the $1500 charge if the dealership foots me the bill :/

I received the yellow engine light and took the car in. 30FF was the code. The car was bought in Calgary and not covered by the warranty. Confirmed that if the car was bought in the USA then the warranty would have applied.

$5349 to fix.

I called BMW Canada (which is not part of BMW North America?!) at 1-800-567-2691 and they told me to contact transport Canada.

They ALL do that. Thats not wastegate rattling. Wastegate rattling happens at higher rpm.

If the turbo fails outright is it covered under warranty? I'm getting the 30FF code and the car is making zero boost. Would this be a case of the waste gate causing the turbo to fail? Any help would be appreciated.

2007 335i Turbo replaced today

I just want to share my recent experience having my turob replaced under CPO warranty + newly extended warranty on the turbo. I initially took the car in for vaccum sound issue and possible small loss of powerl. My SA from Crevier BMW in Santa Ana informed me there is a warranty covers the turbo and said the wastegate on the turob is bad. So they replaced both turbos under warranty, no questions asked.

Who was your service advisor? I'm stuck between going to Crevier or sterling.

Wastegates don't cause turbo's to fail. Wastegates are just exactly what their name implies they dump boost when not needed and work like a flapper that is controlled by a solenoid. Solenoid is run by the DME. The ratting is either the solenoid moving back and forth or some play in the linkage close to the closed point on the turbo which is generally the case. The rattle hurts nothing it just is annoying.

If I was you producing no boost I would check to see if a hose or connector has not blown off. Unlikely both turbos have failed unless someone ran the crap out of it with the engine oil cold and in that case you most likely have limited boost from a lazy turbo(s).
How did you measure no boost condition?

Any failure of a part of the turbo assembly = a failed turbo, PERIOD. IT DOES NOT MATTER IF YOU MAKE BOOST. If the wastgate arm has worn the shaft where it goes into the turbo housing, the shaft will rattle/bind no matter if all other controls are fine including the soleniod. This failure is not user repairable and requires turbo replacement. Please do not post what YOU think is normal.

I just took my 07 335i CPO to an indy for $2500 in repairs and maint. They took it for a test drive after the work and started throwing a 30FF code on WOT. Told me to take it to the dealership for turbo replacement under warranty. The indy shop felt fairly confident that the dealer would replace under warranty.

I bought the car summer of 2010 as CPO with 15k. Now Im at 91k. Im getting spooked that the mileage may not qualify (82k per the bulletin) for the extended turbo warranty. I will shit if I end up dropping 50% of the value of the car for repairs.
