Question About Shifter (AT)

So I have an 08 335i and whenever I want to put my car in DS mode, it'll go to it but it’ll immediately switch back to auto. By that, the shift knob moves a little back into the middle causing my car to go back into auto and I would have to keep my hand on the knob so it wouldn’t move back. Does anybody know what the problem is as to why the shift knob won’t lock into DS mode? I can’t even use my paddles because of that

I believe the wiring is broken. Iirc, the wiring is tight when you move the shifter over and out can get brittle and shine of the wires can snap. You might need to buy a new shifter, not sure.
