CBU round 2: fix it for good this time

After our first round of CBU, the car was OK for a while, but the CBU came back. https://www.e90post.com/forums/image...es/mad0260.gif And it needed brakes and shocks, tires and a few details. Yeah, and the turbos died again. Then a deer ran into the side of it. We drove it around anyway until the ECU told us it would shut the car off due to plugged DPF.

We have been accumulating parts and supplies, and took the time to install a full-size drive-on lift. At some point in the next month or two, the car will get new shocks, bushings, brake pads and rotors, a door, high-flow exhaust, CBU, ERG-delete, new intercooler, SCR-delete, DPF-delete, Fluidamper, tires, turbos, and some new software. Probably a few oil changes too.

Is there any issue with the hybrid turbo set from AAR? I just wrote them one big check but did not yet go for the turbos.

Any idea how long it takes to do the whole task, given a good lift, air tools, and a skilled mechanic?

As before, I will post pictures.

Command_liner, which hybrid setup are you considering? The Finland based Proturbo sounds to be quite the ticket. That check will be a pretty healthy one. Good luck and I’ll be watching.

That's a quite long list I would consider to be multiple tasks, taking me personally probably a week, working all day every day. But I do know it is possible to do the deletes, ECU R&R and new exhaust install in one easy day, if you know what you are doing. That's how long it took Andrew to do mine.

Parts coming in

Parts are coming in. We have exhaust, pads, rotors, shocks, bushings.
The lift is up and the car is parked by it. The RF door has arrived.
Stupidly expensive shipment from AAR due tomorrow.

Still not sure on what tune and turbos.

The travelling mechanic will be coming in a week or so.

There is an album on Flickr.

CBU walnut blast media is available from Home Depot for less than BavAuto. Plus it is
delivered to your local store for free if you order it online. HD SKY/Internet # 204068198
Not that anybody needs to save $20 on this item.

Harbor Freight have the media for cheaper . Use the 20% off and you are around $19 per 25lbs

try the 2.8 for now, should you want more, you can always upgrade to 4.1 and just pay for hybrids, R90 hpfp and difference in tune cost. Add vacuum lines to list, unless I missed it.

We are having at this weekend. So far we have done
1) New rotors, pads, ABS wires
2) New struts/shocks all around
3) exhaust removal right to the turbos
4) EGR removal
5) EGR cooler removal

On deck, and right on the new parts pile, is the Fluidamper and the new intercooler. Plus the EGR delete kit.

The intake is coming of again for CBU, and the head will be walnut blasted again. Turbos will go out for replacement and new oil lines will go in. New software too.

It would be really miserable to do this work without a lift. Even with a lift is is pretty
miserable. We have hand tools, plus air tools, plus new Milwaukee rechargeables. It would be slower without any of those.

Removing the right engine mount is a real pain until you figure out to put your wrench far right and use a 6" extension.

Anybody know how hard it is to change the RF door? That needs to be done too.

We did a bunch of vacuum lines the first round of CBU.

The car will go back together with hybrid turbos. Not sure of what tune to run. We might take it out to PIR occasionally, but mostly my wife will drive it around and roast the tires off like she has been doing since new.

Very nice! I applaud your efforts. If you got the hybrids from AAR, best to consult with them on tune. A 2.8 is not optimized for hybrids

The turbos are out.

Exactly what needs to go back to AAR? Housings? Bolts? What? Go any ideas?

Contacted AAR and we worked things out. New turbos coming soon enough.

Intake is off, cleaned (hot tank local to me) and the swirl valve block-off is being done now. CBU is not bad like the first time. May just use an acetone wash in the valve cover. Will try it out on one port.

Exhaust is in, mostly.

New door is on. Anybody need a RF door with a crease in it? Titanium Silver Metallic.

We tried to get the intercooler in, but it seems quite flimsy on the mount. Will look again soon.
