If your car has been relatively trouble-free up until now, then you shouldn't worry about it. Chances are, with good maintenance, your car will last quite a while with minimal issues.

You can keep a few grand in savings for an emergency fund if that makes you feel better though. Typically, trouble-prone cars exhibit issues well before the warranty is up, so I think you'll be okay.

I agree with snow- investing in an extended warranty is well worth its salt- especially on these beasts.

I bought my car almost out of warranty. Theres really not much to worry about. The HPFP is covered for quite some time. The wastegates/turbos are warrantied for 8 years. All the basic maintenance i do myself, other than oil changes.

I wasn't too worried. Most minor things I can handle myself, and instead of purchasing an extended warranty I put the money I would've spent on one into a savings account to use as needed on any repairs that I can't or don't want to tackle on my own. My car has been basically trouble-free since I bought it, with only a few minor issues that were easily resolved.

That said, 2-3 days after my warranty expired my passenger seat occupancy sensor took a crap. lol (still have to get that fixed, but I think I'll just code out the error).

NO KIDDING!

Same exact thing happened to me a week after my factory warranty expired and I had the airbag light stay on. I'm like you, I'd rather save the money and DIY rather than invest in an extended warranty Ponzi. However, for the airbag, I was able to talk BMW NA into covering me for the repair on goodwill. You could try giving that a shot, PM me if you'd like more details..

Oh no. You're car is going to self destruct tomorrow. Go buy a warranty! Just kidding man. I had a 2007 335i and soon after the warranty expired, little things went wrong but not enough to justify a 3-4k warranty. I got turbos replaced from the wastegate rattle at 81k miles, which is about a $6k job if you are over 82k miles. It has an oil leak at the oil filter housing. A fairly easy and inexpensive DIY. And there is a slight oil leak coming from the oil pan. More intensive, but again, not super expensive. LPFP is bad. I think it's about $160 and a simple DIY. And the clock spring is bad. About a $120 fix. Replaced the water pump at 75k miles. Got one new for $300. So I am going to spend less than $600-800 and be running strong. I'm selling it to a friend as we speak and he's not worried at all. But if you don't have the time, tools, space, and mechanic ability to fix things yourself, you may want to get a warranty. If you go over a few days, they will still sell you one because it obviously helps their numbers.

Yeah, I have already talked to BMWNA. I'm certain I could get it covered with a couple more phonecalls but the guy I talked to was a total douchebag so I haven't bothered pursuing it any further just yet. He wanted me to pay out of pocket for the full diagnosis (even though I see the code so I know exactly what the issue is) as well as the full cost of repair and then "MAYBE" they will "look into" reimbursing me. At this point I'll take my chances with coding the damn thing out, lol.

Yeah it's a hit-or-miss with those guys. I was pleasantly surprised they agreed to that do and my thermostat (P0118) just for asking.. If I had chanced into a douchebag, I'd do the same thing - just f- it and DIY. Good luck, hope it's a smooth fix!

Gotta love it when we walk up to the SA with the fault codes and tell them exactly what the issue is and how to fix it!!!!

Yep, I did that when my Vanos solenoids went out a while back. My SA is pretty cool but I don't imagine they see many people who come armed with codes and part numbers lol. Before my warranty ran out I went in with a huge list of things I wanted replaced. He basically just said "OK I trust you by now" and did all of them, haha. (should have added the occupancy sensor to that list if only I'd known!!!)

Just go into the dealership and use your feminine wiles to get them to help you; *sniffle, sniffle* "please help, I don't know what to do and I'm a girl so I don't know how to fix it. Please, please, please" *high pitched blonde voice*
Use the stereo type to your advantage. My wife got a new key out of them for me by doing this.

My car's warranty was gone well before the age or mileage said so. Stupid modding addiction

That ship has sailed. My SA knows that I know more about cars than he does, so no luck with that approach, haha
