Thanks for all the condolences guys.
I would have thought that the ECU should have two EPROM/ROM sections. I would expect the 2nd to contain the factory loaded version as ROM only

So if the working half dies then the limp home mode ECU is there. When back at the dealers the dealer simply loads back the EPROM section with the latest. Bit like some PC BIOS's. EPROM's can usually last 100,000 write cycles after that they are trash or can just die

The ECU is unlikely to break from what Simon is doing.

The problem is that they are so temperamental to programme the dealer's inclination is to replace the unit rather than be exposed to continued upload issues. Also, BMW would use the OBD to programme and are unlikely to try the 'freezer mod'.

When things were getting a bit tricky on mine Simon did say not to worry as he would sort it out. As it happened I was fairly chilled out anyway (the freezing weather may have had something to do with it). If if failed after the freezer I may have started to get worried though ........

I didnt mean to scare you Carlo's it was just an observation that it could go wrong, it does seem that Simon is a good bloke and would sort it out if anything untoward happend

Just really interested as I run a team of hardware/software engineers and we write lots of code with different communication protocols like CAN (used to talk between car electronics) and program lots of micro's etc.

No problems with my upload,so my ECU does not smell of frozen chicken!
It apppears it has a later version of the software to Evil's as well,so it will be interesting to see how the car's compare on the dyno.

Ian - yours was an earlier ECU with later software.

I can't imagine that there will be anything in it on the rollers as we have both done sililar mileage. Of course my ECU did dine out on Bernard Matthews finest on Monday so you never know .....

No.

Between Ian and me we bunged Simon enough cash to keep you below 325 bhp. It was a donation to road safety ....

Cars with higher native BHP, tend to remap less well.

You will probably have less HP then when you started.

Simon didnt agree, he said that its a percentage increase, so therefore starting with more in theory i should end with more. Thats what the man said!

That's gonna cause Carlos some sleepless nights,I think the map gets better the lower the temperature of the freezer + add some alcohol to the ice cube tray.
