BMS NEW drop in filter review
It’s been a long time since I’ve purchased anything new for my car and decided to give a BMS drop in filter a try. In the past 2 years I went through numerous intake options, that includes; AFE DCI dry, DCI, ATG, BMC and K&N drop ins. Of course without a doubt the most noticeable gains and sound on a tuned car I had with DCI, period! Finally I removed my last intake before service and never but it back.
My car is MSD80/PRE29.2 AT running BMS JB3 1.4 and BMS gauge on 95oct. daily, stock otherwise. I’m not going to say that this drop in gave my car bump in hp nor my car became faster in 1/4ml., Actually I wasn't expecting to feel anything after going through so many intakes in the past. But during the last few days of driving with it, to my surprise I've noticed sharper throttle response, especially in the 1st. and 2nd. gears, when stomping on it from stops. Additionally car seems to climb a bit faster through the upper RPM range in any gear and whoosh slightly louder the stock. I would say that this drop in feels right after the DCI that I had. And defiantly the most pronounced between my previous drop ins. Now, just to make things even more clear, I was running non-lagfix maps at the time of testing to make sure that it’s not only in my head, so there is no confusion between the lagfix throttle feel and the new drop in! To finally see that I’m not full of it (placebo effect) I specifically turned off my JB3 numerous times, by putting it to the valet mode with BMS gauge and let the car adapt to the factory settings. To my surprise the car retained that improved throttle response and slightly faster RPM climb on the top even with a factory tune. I confirmed it by swapping the BMS one with my new oem and back numerous times as well while running the factory boost. FWIW for those who looking not to change the factory air box or preserve the stock look this $59.00 BMS drop in upgrade is very well worth it. |

Look man, I'm not gonna go all mathematical whether it's added an HP here or a bit TQ there. Most probably not. There is whole bunch of comparos out there with numbers to support. It just feels better then stock filter and been like so during the past week. All I care is about drivability and not crunching the numbers.

If nothing else, it NEVER hurts to have a fresh filter in there. Thanks for the review!

It appears you're highly susceptible to jedi mind tricks OP, but 59 bucks for an guaze-type air filter is hard to beat.

i would think that just about everything performance out there in regaurds to the intake is better than stock. i'm running scoops w/ my Helene drop-in, just to keep in simple.
i wish the intake BMW sells for the 328 would fit my 335. i just think it's one of the best looking intakes going. |

I have a Helene drop-in filter which looks 100% identical to this filter. While it did not show any gains on my stock car (did Mustang dyno before/after, the thread is somewhere on this forum), it did show 4hp gains after I installed the BMW Performance Power Kit. So the more additional power, the more gains a drop-in can provide (up to a certain level where another intake option is necessary).

Sounds like a nice alternative to those who like that the stock airbox gives them cooler intake airflow!
I would jump on this too....but I think the airbox housing itself contributes to some pressure drop simply because the air has to travel through the filter and then turn around 180 degrees downwards into the intake tracts to the turbos. I don't doubt that this filter helps to free up some more airflow though! It's just hard for me to get past the physics of the airflow dynamics attributable to the stock box and the inherent drag it introduces to the airflow. But I do understand the attraction in pulling in colder outside air. Anyways, at low to mid rpms, I don't think the stock box is any worse than DCI's. It's at the higher boost/high rpms that I can see the bottleneck making the turbos work a little harder to overcome the pressure drop. Still another value priced product from BMS! Speaking of....my DCI's are looking a little dirty and I am too lazy to clean and oil them. Would just rather replace them with new ones. Mike@N54---do you sell replacement filters separately? |
