It's in an E36 318ti. He says he enjoys it more than his S54 swapped car (weight matters!).

The s54 is one heavy beast! More than the S65 V8, iirc.

Nah, i know a couple people who have gone from the S54 to the S65 - S65 all in weighs more. But the S54 is still at least 150lbs over an N52

Damn those marketing execs over at bimmer.

150lbs is a large difference. The N52 in the E36 chassis really makes the S50/52 extinct.

No disrespect Hass, but 150 is not that much to lose, and the S54 is one of BMW's best engines. It is capable of massive power for its size when built! As much as I like the N series engines they are not the S54...

No, it's quite substantial actually - it's like 50% more mass (but not 50% more power!). It's not much weight in a heavy pig of a car like the E9x (my 330i is 3600lbs with me in it, my E91 is 3800lbs). But on an E30 that only weighs 2800lbs, it's a big difference.

An S54 has more ultimate potential (~350whp is achievable with basically a stock engine), but I want a balanced car and I think I should be able to get close to stock S54 power which is plenty for a car that weighs half a ton less than the E9x.

For your project I agree. I'm just saying that dismissing the S54 isn't warranted either.

I'm not dismissing it - I'm a huge fan of the S54.

yeah, but go listen to some of the youtube videos of the S54 CSL cars at full throttle. The only BMW engine that sounds better IMO is the V12 from the Mclaren F1.

One of the reasons I'd like to try the S54 airbox is ultimately, I'd like to have a CSL style CF airbox - the sound alone would be worth it to me.

I think the S54 head plays a role in that noise, but still should be interesting to see.

Hey hass, could you give me any info on the e36 swap? I recently had an engine fire in mine and am pulling the engine out in the next few days. I suspect it effected the dash, but because the ecu is fine i want to see if a stock engine and wireing harness will work
An n52 swap is my dream down the line...

I know this will sound stupid, but I love that oil level gauge they came up with.

I think that there are some adapter plates to adapt the ITBs to N54 head. Having them make a few dimension changes to the N52 port size would be trivial.
like this-

They might be S52 but they are very similar.

Fab-Factory.
A4RingedONE8T on another bimmer forums site. I think he became Fab-Factory in Tampa. FL.

I was googling n54 ITB and was looking at the pictures.

The Meth/PI plates for the N54/55 fit the N52 head. I have to look closer on my plate to see how well the ports line up. Even if not, I am sure minor measurement changes are easily programmed.

Not to keep this thread off topic, but that is GENIUS! Lots of thought went into that build.
