YIPES and yes that is a huuuge no-no by BMW. Look on the positive side, it burns a bit colder than a Tesla does, and those Tesla can reignite and keep burning.

Yet yes, you are of course right, sometimes defects happen when you make thousands of cars made with tens of thousands of bits and pieces. This is why companies offer recalls to support their products. BMW is better than many when it comes to taking care of their customers imho. It also helps to have a great local dealership as we have here.

tl;dr so apologies if this has already been done. I got a recall notice this week too. It's for my 2007 Z4 3.0si coupe, which has an electrically operated valve that can short out and -- yep -- cause a car fire. No warning to park outside though! I guess cars catching fire is becoming a BMW tradition?
