my friend just bought an iphone from another friend (2G 8gb). so he gives me his iphone so i can unlock and jailbreak for him. so i update it to 2.1 firmware and i do the jailbreak and unlock.

i gave him the iphone and he put in his att sim card and it says to connect to itunes. we do so and he has to fill out phone #, etc. we got nervous that something will happen to the phone so we stopped.

i put my tmobile in and it works. is it b/c it is an att sim? obviously he doesn't have the iphone calling plan but a regular cellphone plan. is there a way to bypass this or he has to use another gsm carrier?

make sure you unclick the activation checkbox. It will cause an ATT sim not to work (it will show no service). Once you unlock/jailbreak it using pwnage tool or quickpwn, insert the ATT SIM, connect to itunes and set the phone up as a new phone. Itunes will activate the phone and everything will be ok.

hm there is no option for activation just unlock. if my friend enters the info itunes asks when he plugs in the phone, wouldn't the phone number confirm he doesn't have an iphone calling plan and not work?

wow i am dumb . i forgot to restore the ispw in itunes before i unlock/jailbroke it. finally got it with no probs

Looks like iPhone dev team broke into the baseband on 3G over the weekend, so there is a possibility of a software unlock coming to 3G. The only way to unlock 3G right now is Rebel SIM. Im going to Russia next week, so I had to buy one. Works pretty well and works on ANY phone, no need to jailbreak or anything. Mine is very jailbroken though
