Cant gas car past 1/2 tank

Ive tried different gas stations and different pumps, but the last 3 fill ups I haven't been able to put more then half a tank of gas in. The gas pump handle always stops pumping and if I try to pull it more, it either has a ton of pressure as if when the tank is full and cant take any more gas. Or the pump handle just locks up and wont put and more in. I use 91 if that matters. I have had my 2011 335is for 5-6 months and its never happened before. Any ideas?

I've had it where I've ran completely empty and then tried to fill the car up where there feels like there is some type of back pressure on the pump so the lever just releases. Try just sitting there and find a good medium holding the handle, not locking it in place, to fill the car up 15-16 gallons. It's going to be annoying because the handle will release every few seconds but make sure you just watch how many gallons you are putting in on an empty tank and fill it up all the way.

Not sure what bmw calls it but there should be a vent valve or something connected to the filler neck that triggers the pump to stop gas flow when pressure is built up. That component may need to be replaced

Check the vent valve and/or charcoal canister at the rear driver's side behind the bumper. Some people have reported that removing the canister and breaking up the pellets that had solidified into a chunk by smacking it on the ground or similar method got their system to allow the gas pump to work properly

I have no idea what any of that is. Time to head to google for research. Maybe this is something that my mechanic should handle.

Still having this issue. Can someone confirm the gallon capacity of the e92 335is tank. I don't want to overfill it.

I believe the DMTL leak module/pump is what causes this I been meaning to replace it but haven't got down to doing so it's worth checking out. I need to replace soon because it's very annoying.

I have the same issue, I get around it by not putting the pump all the way in, maybe like 60% of the way. No issues filling up or overfilling.

I've had issues with some stations that would cut and others that wouldn't.

One trick to do when the gas keeps cutting is to put the nozzle all the way in then rotate it 90 degree or even 120 degrees. That always did the trick.

If still doesn't work then you have an issue with the gas tank venting system somewhere.

If I do what you suggested, will the pump still stop when the tank is almost full? I have a fear of over filling it.

If the pump stops pumping gas in prematurely its usually a clogged tank vent. Spiders like making nests in that system too clogging it. Often what makes a car not have good full throttle power when the tank is low is that the pump in the tank, your low pressure pump is weak and only pumps good or rather good enough when the tank is full and all that gas puts pressure on it to pump
