e92 2011 Cobb AP tuning help
Duchess22 07:49 AM Yesterday
No known mods or tuning exist on the e92. I purchased a Cobb access port device. Discovered it was incompatible with the current version of e92 software on ECU but correct AP model. No known existing issues with the car. Cobb support recommend a bmw ecu update. I took it to a known shop locally to update due to wait time at the local bmw ASC. The shop bricked my ecu, ordered a new one, and began programming it to mate with my e92. Major issues with the download. Roadblocks and programming delays. They stated it was then directly interfaced with the BMW AG mothership for two days and nights. Continued issues regarding the audio, head unit and break sensors. Bmw was writing “new code” to correct the issue. “In 15 years I have never seen this (per shop owner). It’s been over two weeks (including holidays), so I spoke to the shop to get my car (even with the audio issues) as I needed me car. They said it would not be an issue and we would set up a later appointment. They proceeded to flash to stage 1 91 octane. I picked it up at closing time with one mechanic left behind. At parking lot speed I sensed something was amiss. The acceleration was unresponsive and ummmm “sub par”. It felt like eco mode on the newer models. On the road I instantly thought “limp mode” due to the amount of push needed via the accelerator to get off the line and move. This wasn’t the case. The speed kept increasing. Albeit very slow and steady. Zero turbo response. Best I can describe it is as if it was a 5k lbs suv with non turbo 100 hp motor. Soft and with very little reaction. Shifts were smooth but passing effort was passive. It would down shift on the highway, but the speed was as described above. Open issues: all audio and head unit inactive. Break sensor code 255% (new post programming). Minimal acceleration in standard or DS (not limp mode). Corrective actions pending: the shop will continue to interface with BMW AG to download the proper code, set up an appointment to download to my e92. This morning I reflashed to recover the “oem tune” via Cobb AP. I haven’t retested it yet this morning. Insight? (other than “you should have gone to ASC or “I would have left a perfect e92 alone”. What’s done is done and still being done to solve the problem. |

Update: it’s not the tune programming that’s causing the poor performance. Flashed it back to stock. Same responsiveness. Poor.
My inexperience leads me to to theories 1. The car was flashed with something prior to my ownership (although two different ASC’s had there hands on it over three years and not a peep) and when they updated the ecu it was incompatible. 2. The incomplete ecu flash somehow includes the turbo programming, head unit and audio. |

An ECU download issue could be that you ECU needs to be unlocked or the access port was not unmarried. If I were you I would save some time and get mhd, sell the Cobb and get xhp for the trans

At this point I’m questioning the whole performance thing. I need to restore the duchess to OEM then Worry about Cobb vs MHD. I’m taking it to my bmw ASC to complete the download. Cut my losses. At this point, for the service costs, I could have added the hardware needed for some real gains. Live and learn.

Update: I said “screw it” to the tune shop and booked an appointment at the bmw ASC. In an hour and half I received a call that the programming was completed and fully operational.
I programmed my Cobb AP and it flashed as designed. I can’t fully appreciate the changes because of the winter tires I have on now, but shifts are smooth and the the throttle is responsive. I will compare it this summer. |

You have been told numerous times by different people that Cobb isn't the way to go. You have run into problems by trying to utilize it anyways. The two most common tune options are MHD and JB4. Yes, you can use Cobb, Dinan, Vishnu PROcede, ect. They aren't the best options though.

Solved
It was the tuning shop that was in error. They didn't have the resources to finish. Not Cobb, not my car. The ASc had it coded and fixed in 30 mins.
