2006 E90 325i Turns Over but Doesn't Start

Can anyone advise what I should be looking at given the following fault codes:

P16A5 - Engine control unit - internal malfunction, output stage bus - engine control unit
(translated from Motorsteuergerät - interne Fehlfunktion, Ausgangsstufen- Bus - Motorsteuergerät)

P1618 - SBDS Interactive Codes

P2088 - A Camshaft Position Actuator Control Circuit Low Bank 1

The engine turns over but will not start.

Try translating the German into English which is what I did.

It is telling you that the internal temperature sensor is showing a fault and mentions a short circuit mass.

It is not clear without doing further investigation if the temperature sensor is internal to the DME or the MAF but as a first step I would try starting the car with the MAF electrically disconnected.

If the fault is in the MAF it should start and run ok enough to drive although not at proper efficiency.

If that is not the problem then it sounds like your fault is with the DME itself and you will require a repair or replacement unit; Huge $$$

Had another read and apparently the "Steuergerät Innentemperatur" is 140.25 degrees C.

I think it unlikely that the control unit temperature is 140 degrees if the engine has not been running but try thr MAF disconnection first as that costs nothing to do.

Well there is a whole heap more there now!
It's now suggesting the EWS is preventing the engine start.
Think I'd be tempted to clear all of the codes now you have noted them, disconnect the battery for a few hours and see what you get when you reconnect the battery and try to start.
Do you have comfort access or a key you need to put in the dash slot?

I have to put the key in the dash.

How long does the battery need to be disconnected for? I’d assumed a minute or so would have been enough to clear any capacitors?

I’ll clear the codes, leave it disconnected while at work today and report back later. Thanks for the suggestion.

so i just got approved for an 335i. i test driver it everything is good. going to pick up tuesday, new water pump new valve cover gasket and basic maintenance done in the last month (carfax) any expected maintenance coming up soon i should be aware of? (111k miles)

Have any of these been replaced?
Fuel pump
Injectors
Vanos solenoids
Sump gasket
Oil filter housing gasket

It's just a roll of the dice at the end of day, could be fine, could be painful.

Sounds great what year is it

Check coolant colour ( should be light blue ) recommended

VANOS solonoids

VANOS filters

Battery compartment for water ingress

Water pump operation check ( ignition on, lowest blower setting on highest temp and hold foot on accelerator for 10sec ) with header tank lid off should be a smooth flow of water running in the top of header tank.

Air conditioning

Just a few to mention on collection / viewing mate.

You don't get a key symbol come up on the dash do you? Maybe the key is not holding a charge.

Not sure how long you need to leave the main battery disconnected for but I remember reading somewhere it takes quite a while to get the modules to reboot.

Still Not Starting

I cleared the errors with INPA and left the battery disconnected while at work which was about 12 hours. The following shows the state of the error log after reconnecting the battery, after inserting the key and finally after pressing the start button. Any further suggestions gratefully received.

That's a bummer it is coming up with internal DME fault before you even try to start so it looks like it could be a problem.

Might be best if you can find someone who can test/repair these ECU's at this stage.

Perhaps start a new thread asking if anyone can recommend a repair company to go to before considering a second mortgage with BMW for a new one.

Any chance it could just be a fuse? Are there any tests that can be run with INPA or one of the other programs?

Unlikely to be a fuse as INPA fault codes are very specific and you have one that says your ECU has an internal fault.

It's a bit like when you boot up a PC it goes through a self test routine from BIOS and knows it has a problem before it opens Windows or iOS or what ever if its checksums don't add up.

Without pouring cold water on your idea faults on 3 Series are very rarely "a fuse" which is probably why they hide the buggers behind the glove box and are almost inaccessible unless you are a gynocologist

Unfortunately, INPA appears to have done its job and is pointing at your DME.

Just a thought, have you physically looked at the module? I seem to remember on this forum a while ago there was a thread on a non-starting problem and it turned out that the DME had been flooded with water due to a blocked drain in the compartment where it lives.

It is probably worth searching for that post as it also included details of the company that repaired the module as far as I can remember.

It was all looking clean and dry until I happened to rotate the DME and drops of water came out..
