Smile REST (Residual Heat) feature coded back on a 2011 335i!!!

Quick background: I have a 2011 LCI e92 (sept built) and every time I see a picture of a 2007-2010 dash I always regret not having the REST feature. I was simply jealous. California, Florida and Texas (to just name a few) fellow 3-series drivers doesn't care at all and love the introduction of the ALL feature to sync both sides temperature, but here in Canada I think REST (residual heat) is more useful.

Some months ago I came across a thread over here (link) about buying a cable and do some coding yourself. I don't want to explain all the steps here, all the required info is over there, its just a bit long to have an in depth look... Take your time to study it if you're interested.

I've made numerous read of all the available parameters that can be changed and came across one that pretty much shocked me! Its called "REST_TASTE_VERBAUT" some quick google translate revealed that its "REST Button Installed". Interesting ? Well I thought so and made a test to change it from "nicht_aktiv" (not active) to "aktiv" (active).

After all its only a button with a LED and some marking. Its nothing like a old school hardware toggle switch.

After the feature is coded to active, first try. I shut down the car. Start the car: the ALL button that was normally always lit is off. Okay... I press it: nothing -> wow, maybe it works. I took a quick ride, then return home. Shut down the car completely, press the ALL button -> it WORKS!

I exit the car, close the door, lock the car, light is still on and its heating... Come back 15min later, light is off, I open the car its very warm !

I knew it was possible to do something, after all, the 2011 cars still have an electric water pump and all the electronic is there. BMW engineers / marketing decided to react to complaints about the lack of an ALL sync button and decided to replace the function.

Some pictures of the car completely off with the ALL button lit, its heating trust me. And the best off all: in May i'll get the ALL function back for the summer.

Holy !

If this actually does work (and I personally believe you), then this would be the answer for a lot of people. In fact, it's even better than the original REST since you can toggle it back to ALL when not needed in the summer. I'm predicting this may become a very popular thread. Great job!

You just cannot imagine how excited I am right now. That was the only thing I wished my car has...

So for older cars, does this mean we can turn it off and have the ALL feature?

Fyi, the REST feature activates the water pump. So I wouldn't use it too much if are still on your original water pump and have high mileage. See page 17: http://www.socale90.com/forums/attac...ttachmentid=56

Thats exactly the next question to answer, I would think not but who knows. We would need a FSW_PSW.TRC dumb of an older car for the IHK (Climate Control Module) to see if the software switch is there. This will probably be answered in the next couple days in the original coding forum, see link in first post.

!!!! Awesome! I love the rest feature on my 2008 335i. Glad to hear it can be programmed back easily if I were ever to upgrade!

Somewhat unrelated, but would the REST feature be appropriate to use after shutting down the car after a hard run (so that coolant continues to circulate throughout the engine)? Seems like it would be.

Sounds like a good idea too. I've made some tests already and it does reduce the oil / coolant temperature a lot (when its cold outside) from 110C to about 70-80C

Nice job. The only thing I hate about the rest button is sometimes I forget to turn it on.

Never thought about that, but I don't think BMW would let the consumer be responsible for hitting the REST button every time you run it hard, otherwise our cars would be in trouble (who would remember to do that?)

That's not REST, that's parked car ventilation.

Parked Car Ventilation = Airflow through the car at the specified time. No temp control, just air flow

REST = Residual Heat [via coolant] is blown into the cabin after the vehicle is off for up to ?? minutes to keep the car warm while you're in a grocery store or something

When I saw this I got so excited that I emailed this link to my service advisor. He just replied with "yes, I think this can be done. I'll check and get back to you".

This has made me so happy, it's the one thing that has kept me from liking this car as much as the last one because I used it all of the time. If they can do it, I guess I'll change the knob to the REST one since I'm kind of OCD like that.

OP, thank you.

Ummm..why did you link the coding thread in the email you sent to your SA?
Not a good idea.

Well, sounds like a weird idea... In any case, I think they must already know that those threads exist...

I had a 2011 5-series for 2 weeks. I was able to activate the residual heat function just by tapping the fan speed up button once. Has anyone tried this on their 2011 3-series?
