Funny I got some 5w40 on the weekend at Tesco and I already have a box of oil ready to use when I can be bothered to do the job. Like busses...

Cracking deal. Couldn't pass it up.

I've got 16L here from all the previous offers. The offers seem to come round quicker than my mileage counter.

Still tempting to load up. Thanks OP!

If anyone lives in Reading and wants some I have 3 bottles of these I’d sell for 20 each. Ironically enough I live next door to Tesco

Looked in Tesco's today and the 5w30 stuff is not BMW approved, it's not LL01 or LL04 the 5W40 is though.

It is interesting. I believe the LL01 is fine and is developed to cope with higher sulfur content fuels, which Europe doesn't allow but the US does.

Luckily for me I use heavier 40W in a tuned car which creates more heat.

Yeah, just been in and checked. No LL04 for the 5w30

It's worth doing some research. I think LL01 is simply more resistant to more sulfur in the fuel vs LL04 which isn't as resistant but doesn't need to be due to EU laws of sulfur content.

You can use LL01 but neither that nor the LL04 is in the 5W30 sold by Tesco's unfortunately.

I've read this many times but I just don't understand what you are saying?

The 5w30 is LL01 approved
The 5w40 is LL04 approved

What I'm saying is, if you go into Tesco's and pick up a bottle of the 5W30 Castrol oil it is neither LL01 or LL04 spec. It doesn't list BMW in the approved by list on the back of the bottle either. Whereas the 5W40 bottle of Castrol does have LL04 spec listed on the back and has BMW in the list of approved for manufacturers on the back of the bottle.

What I'm trying to say is the 5W30 Tesco's are selling is not the right spec for BMW engines technically speaking. The viscosity is correct but it doesn't conform to BMW oil life standards.

Castrol do make 5W30 oil that is LL04 it's just not the one currently sold by Tesco's.

However this is only in the Tesco's I went into, but I imagine they will bulk buy so other stores stock may be the same.

Hope this makes sense

It's a good price. Shame they don't do BMW spec in the lowe viscosity. I'd rather stick to 5w30 for faster oil warm-up times.

Though the benefit on a 125k mile engine might be lower oil consumption (better than 3k miles per litre).

Has anyone switched from 5w30 to 5w40?

Won't matter in the grand scheme of things, I sometimes differ from one to the other, depends what's on offer, but I mainly run 5w40.

Hey Guys, my car is about to go into the garage for some suspension work and while it's there I will have the oil changed along with a general check and MOT.

Anyone have some good oil they want to sell me? Must be enough for a full change.

I think a 330d needs 7.5 litres of oil

Nope, when I changed the oil around 6 months ago I bought 7 litres and I still have some of a 1 litre bottle left.

The OBC states the oil level is at MAX and the dipstick shows near the MAX line.

I actually think I put a touch too much in......

You sure you drained all your oil out?? I put just shy of 7.5 in mine when I did my last oil change.
