Water pump shorted

I found out just today that my water pump shorted out and need to be replaced. Was quoted $900. Probably coz I live in Idaho and this is the nearest BMW shop for a few hundred miles. What pisses me off is my car has only 45k on it. Its late 06 325i and just after the warranty ended I had to replace my windshield washer pump. Since then I have a leeky pump for the head lamp washer and a valve cover gasket that has started to leak oil.

So the total quote to fix all of this is about $1800. Why do I have a feeling that fate is out there is screw with me.

This is on top of the small DIY fixes I did fixing door actuators and blown tail lamps. Still got to agree that its the best car I have ever owned.

Same issue on both my Z4 E85 and BMW 330i E90... both had the waterpump replaced @ $500 each.

Thanks guys. Seems like this is indeed a common problem.

My water pump died just shy of 110,000 km (328xi). It shorted out the thermostat too. Had to get a tow truck to take it to the dealer.

Car was limping with no power... so if you have a road trip, it's better safe than sorry.

My starter also died within the same timeframe, apparently also a common issue.

I was glad I extended my roadside assistance, I've used it 3 times since renewal last year.

Water Pump failure

With just 63K miles mine failed just over a week ago. Needed to be towed. The only advance warning I had was no heat. Therefore, I thought the thermostat has failed. BMW dealer charged me $986 for the pump and $568 labor. In the process of the failure, battery lamp came on and the dealer told me the battery is weak and it needs to be replaced. Total cost including the tow for $90 (got reimbursed by State Farm) was $1,997 after the dealer knocked off $280 for being a good customer. What the hell is the mark up on this water pump. Does it have gold impellers?

Ouch. The retail here in Canada is about the same as yours but some dealers will heavily discount the part. They installed mine for one hour labour at 130/hr - 15%.

Water pumps fail on all cars, unfortunately ours are electric and cost hundreds of dollars.

Water Pump failed at 55,000 miles (2007 328 wagon)

Mine failed 5,000 miles over the warranty (i.e. at 55,000 miles). The dealership as well as BMW North America were not willing to discuss any contribution towards the repair; instead, the dealer wanted $1,400 for pump, thermostat and coolant!! Checked with an independent BMW mechanic and his price was considerably less: $1,000!

The dealer professed to know nothing about premature water pump failures for the 328 that are being discussed all over the internet. Looks like the days of goodwill via a contribution for a premature part failure are gone!!!

My only recourse is to forego future repairs at this dealer.

Sold my car at 135k, original water pump - but Flushed the coolant at 90km like it should be. I would not take the chance if you drive across country during the summer but if you do it now you should be ok but just in case purchase the water pump and thermostat and have it with you do you don't get gauged if you're stuck somewhere

06 325i - 131,000km

driving around yonge/eglinton a few nights ago and my electric fan came on HIGH speed whirring away to cool the engine. around 15 minutes later the heat inside the car completely died. only blowing cold air. around another 10 minutes later my engine temp lamp came on in yellow. (symbol of thermometer with water under it).

I pulled over into a plaza and waited around 10 mins. I took it easy on the 401 going home, the lamp did not illuminate. I kept it in 6th gear and popped it in neutral and let the freezing cold temp air cool the engine. closer to home the lamp illuminated again, I shut the engine off and let it roll most of the way home just starting the engine when I needed to start from a red light. the lamp was always YELLOW not RED (which means to stop the engine immediately).

My check engine light then came on. I scanned the codes and came back with 3x codes, can't remmeber which ones right now I can post 'em later. But was essentially water pump voltage / water pump nominal speed not as expected.

I cleared the codes and they haven't come back yet after driving the past few days. Waiting to see if it comes back again before I go through the labour to replace it. Was quoted around $700 parts+labour to install in the GTA.

From what I notice they are good for 100k... But they do go out.... Most mechanical pump last 100k also ... I wouldn't say it's a problem
