Exclamation Recall Remedy Finally Available! (No. 16V-071: Drivers Air Bag Module)

Got my letter in the mail today and will be scheduling my service appointment ASAP! I got a kick out of the warning in their letter...

"What Could Happen?

In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the driver's airbag, excessive internal pressure could cause rupturing of the air bag inflator, resulting in metal fragments striking the driver or other passengers potentially resulting in serious injury or death."

With that warning you would think they would have found a solution faster

The solution has been found/known for a long time. I got that letter like a year ago. They just can't make the revised airbags fast enough so they're staggering the release of that letter. The dealer won't order a new airbag without that letter.

Wow! Thank goodness global warming hit your area. I bet it’s so hot, humid, and rainy like the jungles of southeast Asia up there.
Because I live in the extreme cold and dry, icy, snowy, and arctic tundra of Florida, the sun hasn't shined in 60 days, therefore I haven’t received my letter yet.

I'm in the south and still haven't received my letter telling me the parts are available for my 2011 335i. I wonder if the model year also determines when you get the remedy.

The OP has a 2007. I live in VT and have a 2007, and just got the letter and made an appointment, my dealer assures me they have the part.

I would guess age of the defective part may be a factor in the likelihood of catastrophic deployment, since the "interim" solution for some vehicles was a replacement with a newer made, but similarly suspect, part.

Got my letter. Nearest dealer is 800 miles away with 12 hours of ferry travel as well. At least two nights in motels and possibly hitting early snowfall and late season road construction; in other words a major expense of time and money. I asked BMWUSA if they would send a technician to my town to do the airbags on the local cars here, and they said no..also no to reimbursement of any travel expenses....thanks a lot.

I'd keep your receipts if you get around to doing that. There's a class action lawsuit filed against takata, and (I'm no lawyer) it reads as if your expenses can get covered from the settlement.

Might be worth reviewing but again this does not constitute as legal advice

Got mine over the weekend, they are finally getting around to fixing the 335I. SA showed me the priority list and the 3 series seem to be at the bottom of list the 7 and 5 and X cars were higher on the list and I think the 1 series was also higher.

I got the letter a month ago and called the dealer immediately. They said they'd call me in 2 weeks after verifying the airbag was ordered and on-hand to swap out, and get me scheduled. Of course I never got a call so called them again this AM and was told to first make an appt so they could order the part and have it ready by the appt date. Arrrrggg.

So this AM I made the appt for 9/26 and they assured me this time they'll have the part ready to swap out. I received an appt confirmation email after they updated all my contact and ownership info relative to the VIN in the BMW system, so I should be all set for anything else in the future.

Oddly enough the email also contained a notice the HPFP recall would be done, as well as the injectors.

Odder still is that neither of these recalls was listed as active when I researched the car prior to buying it a few months ago. Since I know neither of those things was checked or replaced prior to my purchase, I'm curious if they'll actually be done during this appt. Would be nice to at least get a free HPFP out of the deal. LOL

I already changed out the ancient injectors (mostly index -01s, and one index -03 I believe) for -12s myself a few months ago, so will check on reimbursement possibilities there. I actually bought the injectors from the same dealership so at least they'll have a record of it.

We're in Houston. Got the letter on our 2007 and had the airbag replaced. Still waiting on the 2008 and 2010 though.

I got my letter at the end of June 2017, called the dealer a couple days later. They said they would need to get the parts in (probably 2 weeks) before they could set up an appointment for me. I've since called them at the end of July, and a couple days ago asking what's going on. They still haven't got the parts in yet.
