Thanks.

I hope this is covered by the warranty in case I suffer a failure before end of the year.

+1 for common
Mine failed the night I had a motorcycle accident and broke my collar bone! earlier this summer. Extended warranty covered the pump but not the thermostat! So I only got them to replace the pump since I think the thermostat is functional and they are just BSing me

All these guys had issues, but you don't hear the other 95% that have made past 100,000 kms without issue. I wouldn't worry about it. If it goes it goes, but you can't possibly predict it or get BMW to replace it for preventative maintenance.

Question

At some points in our lives we gamble onto more risky ventures such as stock markets, 401K, new jobs, newborn babies, relocations, getting married, etc, etc; yet we are so afraid of a water pump failure

Mine lasted until about 200k so you "should" be fine. Mike at Maranello will hook us up with great prices on these expensive pumps. I changed the thermostat at the same time since I was already down there and they are side-by-side.

Extremely rare on 323/328i. Common on 325/330/335i

It's something to think about, but not something to constantly worry about. I'm at 98K now, still fine *knock on wood*

These eletric water pumps are known for going. I have the complete history for my car and it's at 128k with the original pump still. *knock on wood*

Replacement is around $800 in the GTA with labour and tax included. Some independant shops can do it a bit cheaper. It's not a very tough job. Just more expensive than the usual pulley driven water pump because it's electric.

Also note that BMW Toronto's regular prices for parts are cheaper than Mike's 'discounted prices' at Maranello. Each BMW dealership sets their own prices for parts, so make sure to call around. Maranello typically charges 20% more th an the BMW recommended price, and with discounts (i.e. Mike's forum hookup price, BMW Car Club of Canada, Dealership/Bodyshop price) is only 10% off of their marked up price. Food for thought. I still usually go to Maranello because it's convenient from my location, but if it's a large ticket item then its worth the trip downtown.
