The dealer will not be able to do anything with them. They order keys from BMW that come with the transponder pre-programmed to the car. The only think the dealer does is update the CAS to disable lost key - this is necessary for CA keys, because CA only works with 2 keys, and a lost CA key must be disabled for a new CA key to work.

If the keys were used, but 'virginized' - which means the transponder chip was replaced with a new, factory set transponder chip - the fob might be programmable by a locksmith. The locksmith needs to have tool capable of programming BMW keys - some do, most don't.

If the key is used with original transponder chip, it's pretty much worthless - unless you want to try purchasing the correct transponder chip, are soldering the new chip on, and then following the above.

I bought a fob + insert key in eEuroparts.com recently. It was cheaper than the dealer. You will need to send ID and proof of ownership.

europart says that "This part will require further programming by a certified professional after installation." What was required for you?

Also, I see it doesn't have the mechanical key part. Did you have to buy it separately?

Thanks--

This is how you program any OEM or aftermarket key if you are not the dealer.

Well, the key was for my F30. The steps to activate it were very simple, what I remember is: put it next to steering wheel and push the Start button 5 times or so.

Correct, the mechanical key is extra. It even has a different part #.
