Update:

Reinstalled my stock intake and reset all adaptations (didn't do this after replacing the HPFP). After 2-3 cold starts with no long-cranks but a bit of stuttering, they have progressively gotten better over the last week. As of right now the last 5 cold starts have been long-crank free with the only issue I am experiencing being "hiccups" during the cold start sequence. Thanks for the help and information everyone!

Ok, my turn to vent. My car has Pure 2, PI, and the whole 9 yards of supporting hardware. It has a custom Twisted Tune, running e50 at 22 psi. While the car does not necessarily have long cranks it has been running like a dog for several weeks. Out of the blue the other day I got two codes: 2BEF and 2BF0. I cleared the codes and reset adaptations. Power was restored, but only for a bit. Back to flaccid, but not limp, mode.

I found this and another thread. Before I cough up 400 + install cost to see if the HPFP swap I wanted to be as sure as I could before wasting my money. I say wasting since in logs the fuel pressure seemed ok. > 2000 psi through a few runs. I have 68 K miles, and this is the second HPFP, replaced at 30 k or so under CPO. Guys, please comment on how y'all resolved this condition.

These HPFP are not designed to handle your mods.. its as simple as that. For 22 PSI.. ur really pushing the capabilities of that design

Alternate fueling is great and will eliminate knock but the problem here is the demand that is put on the Fuel pump by the DME.. Its beyond its design.

We need upgraded HPFP to really see the benefits of this engine long term.

Thats the problem very expensive. IDK why because VW has had HPFP upgrades always for few hundreds that support massive boost..

But there is obv more to it..

Not sure I am buying that. Two reasons, with a 2011 I believe that I have what is basically the same HPFP as the N54 guys. Some are pushing way more than I am. The second reason, when I was running JB4 with a BEF I did not have this problem. If the demand is so high, why isn't the pressure drooping?

And then there is Alex. His big power build may be in vein. He must be warned.

I totally respect that. Its only my opinion. Based on some experience and knowledge from other direct injection cars with crank driven pumps.

The reason why i say what i say also, i dont think there would be work and research from other teams to improve or redesign if there wasn't a known issue. Esp with that type of price tag in the thousands.

You do realize that HPFP upgrade is for the new style pump, not the one you or Ozzie have.

Good catch. That being said, I know TTFS just finished up R&D on an upgraded pump for those of us with the 2011 and older cars. Not sure if they have it listed for sale on their website yet.

If you buy a new HPFP get it from FCP euro, lifetime warranty and you'll get unlimited amount of them if they break.

if one is not running any type of alternative fuels, any point in upgrading the HPFP?

Thats where I ordered mine. Even with my employee discount, a new OEM pump from BMW was $600+. I bought the refurb one off FCPEuro for only $350 or so. Lifetime warranty is the tits.

If you have a 2011+, then yes there would be a point in upgrading your HPFP if you're running a anything more than just bolt ons and a tune. If you're 2011 and older, you mainly just need to upgrade your LPFP to run alternative fuels.
