$1536 for Dealer Installed Performance Exhaust?!
Dang, so I call my dealership up about my car and tell them that I'm interested in getting the performance exhaust installed on my car, and the price for the exhaust itself on the site is $1295, and it said that the dealer installed rate with the purchase will total $1385.
I thought, well this isn't so bad. BUT then I give them a call and the parts department says something was screwed up because they were getting the total of $1536 on their screen. We were both putting in the same zip code. Is there a better way for me to do this? I don't feel comfortable going to a different shop to get this installed for cheaper. Tischer offers the same exhaust for like $1100. Maybe I can get it shipped from Tischer to my dealership and then have them install it? Saves me a couple hundred? Thoughts? Expressions? Feelings of emotions? Let me know |

do you want to keep your warranty? thats why it costs more at the actual dealership.

however, its straight forward, the dealer will rape you. my friend who has a shop did my "PE" and it was the first e90 exhaust he has done. took 45 min and will did slow and careful as time wasnt an issue. find a good indy, make sure they can drop exhaust from cats via bolts(hopefully they are not seized yet) lay it out on the floor, measure and cut, stick secondary cats and pipe back on, slide on new pipe with clamps(they give you some margin for error) install muffler, snug up clamps and align muffler so its straight, look at it from a few angles and tighten clamps and your done. some will cut on car and measure pipe from there(faster) but droping it to cut is better as wont cut into heat shield. 100 bucks would be the most to charge for this as bmw exhaust fits with no issues. |

Are you still trying to keep your warranty intact, if you have one? If you are, I believe you have to have the BMW PE installed at a BMW dealership. Based on the first price you quoted and then install total, the dealership is only charging you $90 for install? If I calculated it correctly, to have it shipped from Tischer to WI would be $1,149.95. That would probably be the cheaper way to go.

they always use that warranty thing, i thought about it too till i saw it and we put on. i bet you they will get an apprentice to put it on at bmw.
if the guy forgets to tighten clamps-yes, just ask to inspect it before they drop it and take it off car before cutting it. i had mine done and 1 month later i had a warranty problem with the car not idling, took it in, they didnt say anything or asked were i got it done. |

There are horror stories on the M3 forum about exhaust installs because some installers remove some bolts from the diff and don't put it back together right. I'm assuming, these cars won't have this issue.
Install costs is about right, they're charging you for about 1 hour of mechanic time. I'm planning on installing the M3 PE on my car and was quoted $170 from my dealer and $200 from another for the install. |

then pay the 200 dollars and keep your warranty. IMO i would pay it so if you have any problems just dealer-it.

Is this just the closest dealership near you, or the one you purchased the car from? I know for the most part it's the the same installation price across the board but there's been a few times where members have gotten it installed for cheaper at the dealership they purchased the car from.

This is true, there will always be horror stories. Just search around and see which BMW dealership is reputable around your area in regards to installs. |

my PE Exhaust and PE Intake were done at the dealer. I have an indy that's more than capable of installing it -- but it came down to a warranty issue for me. Didn't want to chance it. I made the mistake of buying it for the dealer AND having them do the install...which ran something silly like $2500 for the exhaust and the intake. I would think your best bet is to buy it off Tischer then bring it to a dealer.

What I understand is that it should only affect the warranty for the exhaust itself if your dealer even makes a stink about it at all. But I may be wrong. In the end if it scares you that much pop the extra $, its worth your peace of mind.

It is the dealership I purchased my car from.
I have this 15% off discount thing I got a while ago, so I'm going to see if I can use that since I'm paying 800 cash and the rest on my card. |

The warranty concerns seem a bit far-fetched. It's a BMW OEM part, designed for this car. And the PE install is not complicated at all. It'd be a miracle if someone screwed it up.
A reputable indy shop (check your regional forum here and ask for good shops) will in all likelihood take better care of your car and you than the dealer, and be cheaper at the same time.
